Hyundai Transmission Problems Persist With 2016 And 2017 Models

October 04, 2017
By: Robert Silverman

If you are driving a 7-speed dual-clutch Hyundai, you may be experiencing transmission issues and you are not alone. Our law firm has been representing consumers with Hyundai transmission problems dating back to 2011 and now they are affecting 2016 and 2017 models as well, specifically the 2017 Hyundai Elantra Eco, 2017 Hyundai Sonata Eco, 2016-2017 Hyundai Tucson and 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo. We initially wrote about Hyundai Tucson transmission problems back in 2012 and have successfully handled numerous cases regarding these problems.

Common Hyundai transmission problems include: difficulty shifting gears, hesitation when accelerating, loss of power and stalling.  These issues has been written about on multiple automotive websites like Car Complaints, Consumer Reports and It Still Runs.

If you are experiencing Hyundai transmission problems, we suggest taking your car to a local Hyundai dealer as soon as possible. Be sure to obtain repair invoices after each visit to confirm the vehicles mileage, days out of service, your complaint, and their fix. These invoices must be kept in a safe place.  They are extremely important when it comes to documenting your claim.

If you’ve had repeat visits to a dealer to address your Hyundai transmission problem, or your car has been in the shop for an extended period of time while they try to address the issue, please send us an email or call us at 1 800 LEMON LAW (1 800 536 6652). You could be looking at a repurchase, new vehicle, or significant monetary compensation under State or Federal Law. Best of all, these laws provide 100% cost-free legal representation.

If you have any inquiries surrounding a Hyundai with transmission issues, feel free to reach out and we will be glad to either answer your question or find someone who can. When it comes to Hyundai transmission problems, its important not to “stall” when it comes to fighting for your rights.

    Hello, my name is Carol n I have a Hyundai Veloster 2016 . purchased-date is April 7,2017 .
It’s been in the service dept .7 times in 6 months and for such issues as :
    • check engine lights –
    • Oil changes multi-point inspection set tire pressure & replacing all 4 tires balanced/alignment. –
    • check engine light on,
due to purge control valve not flowing properly n necessary to order & replace .
I’ve had many conversations about my concerns and the way car drives n my concerns about performance has always been re the transmission , acceleration issues , rattling in engine, dual clutch is always in 5th gear. Dealership always verifies concern, runs test , adjust test drives n verified correct opperation.
It runs ok briefly right after (always less then 10miles) then goes back to same rattling acceleration problems shifting problems. Sounds n feels like car starts off In a higher gear.
When ever I switch from automatic mode to dual clutch mode it displays 5th gear even if I down shift to first gear/Then (D) drive and back to dual clutch mode . Always displays 5th gear.
Then the car brakes down after I accelerated onto road way , the transmission fails . It no longer goes into Drive or reverse . Leaving no choice but to push out of road n call TOW TRUCK . Car is back at dealership service dept. at this time.

I have a walk-in appt. to talk with a dept. head in the morning (Tuesday)

I’m needing consultation on course of action necessary to resolve this

I have a 2018 Hyundai Elantra SEL. At 3000 miles took it to the dealer for oil change and transmission issues. It rough shifting, so rough from 1st to 2nd that it moves my body forward. Two service employees drove it and said they didn’t experience it. At 7500 miles still doing it. I believe Hyundai has a problem to solve!

I have had problems with my tucson 2017 limited. Have had it in shop innumerable times to no avail ” operator error” functioning as designed. Bull crap. Caused me to have an accident because it did not accelerate. Hyundai basically told me it was my fault. That I did not know how to drive the car. Stuck with it they said. I just wanted something that was the same year and with the same miles without this transmission. They (hyundai) told me to eat it. Read the manual was their response also the response of Lester Glenn in Toms River NJ. Previously I owned a Sante Fe which gave me no problems. However, the sante fe did not have this transmission. Talk about crappy company. Side note: Hyundai as of this year no longer is using that transmission.

I purchased a 2013 Hyundai Veloster in 2016 (was third owner only 31,000 miles), and financed for 6 years.i have had this car just 2 years, and had to have a transmission installed approx. 6 months after purchase, after it stranded me on the interstate. It had a problem stalling or not accelerating at first, and I took it in several times, for them to say they cold not see an issue. Then if course, the transmission went out, and was replaced. I just relocated to Florida, and the transmission has gone out again, with less than 40,000 miles on new transmission! I still owe 4 years on this car. Please help, what can I do?

I have a 2017 Veloster that I purchased 11/2017 which has similar issues with shifting and failing to accelerate as well.
The problem seems to be worse when the engine and transmission haven’t warmed up. I’ve taken it in and they say that its a dual clutch transmission and they work differently. I know the transmissions are different, but when you step on the gas and the car doesn’t go, then there;’s a problem.

I have a 2016 Tucson and was called in for the transmission recall. There was nothing wrong with the transmission before I brought it in, but right after they did the transmission reprogramming, it started exhibiting all the bad signs, poor gas mileage, poor shifting, and stuttering clutch taking off from a dead stop slowly.

I have not been back to the dealer since…. but I assume they would just turn me away since there is no check engine light….but there was no check engine light when I first brought the car in the first place…. I wish I never brought the car into the dealer…I’m pretty sure they ruined my car, and I’m a fairly experienced DIY mechanic, it was pretty obvious to me…

I will revisit the dealer and try to demand they reverse the programming back to normal next time I guess….that was my first thought on what should be done….. they basically ruined our car….I don’t know what the hell they were thinking…

I own a 2017 Santa Fe Ultimate. On February 8, 2019 I experienced a horrific transmission failure that nearly killed me. I drove my car to the curbside in front of a theater on a level street. Upon stopping, I moved the shifter from “ D “ to the “P” position. The car stopped. Without turning off the engine nor activating the emergency brake, I unbuckled the seat belt and opened the driver side car door. I intended to step out of the car to open the passenger car door behind the driver’s seat to let friends to get in. Immediately after I exited the car with both of my feet firmly on the ground, the car started to move in reverse. The driver side car door knocked me to the ground. The left front wheel immediately ran over my left foot and proceeded up my ankle, leg, thigh, hip, then across my chest and finally over my upper right arm. The incident was witnessed by family member, friends, and others who just came out of the theater after a performance. Hyundai did an analysis of the transmission system and declares the transmission is flawless. Hyundai “ shifter fro P to R “ was a problem in their Sonata model a few years ago which resulted in a massive recall. This same problem happened to my 2017 Santa Fe which has less than 15,000 miles on it. I am fortunate to be alive with only non life threatening injuries.

My Subaru was at the dealer for a recall repair. They paid for a free rental and sent me to Enterprise Rentals who provided me with a Kona I have no idea of what model year as it was on the rental agreement. Noticed the Shiftronic slot to the left of the gear shift stick and tried it out on a street a couple of times and then stopped using it. On my way to return the car to Enterprise because the repair on my Subaru was finished. While on the freeway I was flowing with the traffic so my speed was 60-65 mph. I say this because I was in the lane second from the right. The car suddenly went from 4th or 5th to 1st or 2nd. My speed dropped rapidly, I looked in my review mirror and saw a car comming at me at 60 mph. I tried to move to the right not thinking about traffic in the lane. As near as I can tell I got hit by the car that was behind me then by a second vehicle and then by a motorcycle. The motorcycle came to rest on the right shoulder out of traffic so I don’t know if he hit the car at that location or not the cycle was on the ground parallel to the lane. I sustained injuries but not serious enough to keep me at the hospital and I was released. The motorcyclist was in critical condition and don’t know if he is still alive or dead. After that long story my question is can these shiftronic transmission suddenly drop gears like that? It is possible I accidentally moved the lever to the left an down somehow but shouldn’t there be a safety measures to prevent exactly that problem.? The one feature of the shifttronic is that the slot to move from full automatic to shifting mode is immediately to the left of the shift lever and you switch from one to the other by moving the lever from the left to the right or the right to the left. The accident happened two days ago so the CHP report is not out and I still have to talk to my insurance company. My main concern is if it can happen once, it can happen more than once.

Hello Hyundai owners and Lemon Law agents,

My 2012 Sonata has 135,000. The transmission and acceleration has gone from bad to super bad. When in Reverse it jerks violently and also shifting to Drive.

It accelerates and decelerates harshly from 5 to 40mph and struggles at speeds of 70 or more.

The dealership claimed they couldn’t feel or reproduce the complaint yet will cost me $980 for a transmission sensor to fix with no guarantee that will correct the problem.

The service guy mentioned trading it in on another Hyundai piece of -ish. Or keep throwing money into the car and hopefully one day it will be fixed….OMG!!!!

Also, forgot to add that at times, I get in the car start it up put in gear and nothing, engine revs and car goes nowhere. I have video of me in the car switching gears and pressing the gas and nothing. From P to D to Neutral to Sport back to D and P and nothing, then all of the sudden it kicks in, so I have to be careful of my surroundings, so I do not hit anything. The dealership knows this and I have shown them the video and still nothing on their end. They just “ADJUST’ the clutch, like you would a manual transmission.

I have a 2017 Elantra, bought new in October 2017. For the two years that we have had this car I’ve never taken it anywhere but to the dealer for oil changes. Fortunately, the only other issues that I’ve had, break lights, I’ve been able to do myself. Several months after we got this car, I started noticing a little rattle when accelerating from a full stop. But it wasn’t all of the time, so I just made sure that I didn’t accidentally change it to manual shift. It started hesitating a little more as time went on. I noticed recently that it was slow to change gears, especially when on an incline. I remembered seeing something on the report that was given to me after my last oil change about checking the transmission fluid. So we went online to find out where to locate it under the hood. After we saw that it wasn’t anything that we could do on our own, and that it was recommended that we take to a mechanic to have it done, we took it to a local dealer for a transmission flush (“fluid exchange”) this past week. But that didn’t resolve the issue. It’s actually gotten worse. I’m saying a prayer every time that I have to merge into traffic. It won’t pick up speed right away, and the RPMs are going up and down the whole time that I’m driving. Sometimes all the way up to six. I called the dealer, but the service tech that worked on my car isn’t in today. We haven’t had this car long enough for this to be happening, so we’ve been checking to see if there were any recalls for this issue, but all we can find is a recall for a break sensor. I’m hoping to get some assistance and/or advise on what’s going on and/or what to do next.
