Defect Alert- Hyundai Alignment Issues

February 23, 2011
By: Robert Silverman

We are seeing a number of Hyundai Accents and Sonatas coming through with alignment issues.  In many cases, the tires are balanced numerous times, the tires have been swapped out and the cars have been aligned again and again, often numerous times before the 10,000 miles mark.  Alignment could eventually cause premature tire wear and other problems so you want to address it as soon as possible. If you are back in repeatedly for an a alignment issue, call us at 1-800 LEMON LAW or fill out our Get Rid of Your Lemon form so we can see if we can help you.

I have a 2011 Sonata currently with a pulling issue to the left. As I type this it is in service at the dealer. This is the 3rd attempt to correct the problem.
The first visit I was told that the car is aligned to the specs provided by Hyundai. About 3 weeks later I am noticing that this pull is coming back, started out minimal and I thought maybe tire pressure had something to do with it. Pressure was checked and ok. The pull was gradually becoming more noticeable. If I took my hands off the steering wheel, my car drifted in to the other lane of traffic. I had to definitely drive putting an emphasis on steering to the right to keep the car straight. The dealer that serviced the first visit is approx. 40 miles from me so I took it to a closer dealer. The service manager at this dealer explained that this issue has already been looked at through another dealer and they cannot help with an existing problem.
I made an appointment with the original dealer. Took the car in for service, the service manager tells me there is still a pull. We cannot do anything else with the alignment numbers. We will put a note in to Hyundai and have them look into it.
Well, rather than someone try to sugar coat the situation, I contacted Hyundai on my own. I sent an email, was contacted by a regional associate, told the dealer would contact me. NOTHING. I sent a 2nd email, was contacted by the same regional associate, told the dealer would contact me when a steering kit came in and that should take a week. NOTHING. A 3rd email was sent to Hyundai, this time I am extremely frustrated and they know it. I stressed my dissappointment and that I am never recommending a hyundai vehicle to anyone, that I was sold on false pretences and guess what the dealer called, the kit came in.
Bottom line…this model had a steering alignment problem. I have been researching and browsing the internet only to find out I am NOT the only sonata owner with this problem! This has nothing to do with hitting a curb, this car has low profile tires, if you hit a curb it is going to be obvious. I am supposed to return to the dealer today to pick up my car. I will definitely update the situation, as I truly feel the frustration involved with this problem, and I intend on getting this resolved. Anyone reading this and is having the same problem, browse around it’s out there as a serious issue that is not getting resolved.

I have a 2007 Hyundai, Azera for which tires were purchased in March, 2010 at a Hyundai Dealer. The car never ran smooth and I was given a free balance on the tires, which did not help the vibration. Last week I was told by the service manager at Hyundai that my tires on the front of my car were worn. He stated the dealership could not do anything to help me with the problem other than sell me two new tires. I refused, had I purchased the tires it would have made me buy SIX (6)tires in less than a year and three months. In checking with other tire companies I was told that they were seeing a number of Hyundai cars in need of tires due to alignment problems. When I confronted the dealership with this information, the service manager, told me he was unaware of any problems. He went on to tell me that I should have had an alignment done every six months, something no one bothered to mention. Each time I complained about the tires there was an excuse for why it ran so bad, be it the type of rubber used to make the tires or the weather.
I find it strange that Hyundai is the only one unaware of the alignment problem.
Long story short there is a problem when tires on a car cannot last 15 months. This is unacceptable..

We own a 2007 Azera and have had the same issue with worn front tires that were purchased just 8 months ago. We were told that the front caster/camber could not be adjusted and that even after the alignment, which was done on the car and we paid for, the car could not be adjusted. We were also told by the service manager at the Hyundai dealership that we should try to fix the issue by going to a local auto body shop. Their explanation was that we must have hit some major potholes and that it created the issue. It just seemed a little far-fetched. I plan to have someone else take a look at it so I can have a second opinion but it sounds like this is a known issue with certain Azera and Sonata models. Let me know if you have any thoughts or recommendations. Many thanks.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Genesis 3.8, and at 4800 miles my tires were feathering, I contacted the dealer that I purchased the vehicle from, and was stated I needed a 4 wheel alignment, and they did it, but the tires are worn a little on the out side of all 4 tires. So that means I will need new tires sooner than later…WOW
A very UNHAPPY HYUNDAI OWNER, and I traded in for this thing a 2010 Mercedes Benz ML 550, STUPID!!!!!!

I own a 2012 Hyundai Accent 4-door Sedan. I brought my car in with 16,600 miles for a routine tire rotation. I was told I shouldn’t even be driving it because all 4 tires were bad. One tire was almost smooth, the other had a split going across it. Is this a common problem with this low mileage on Accents, or is this just a fluke?

I live in Canada but I thought I would share anyways. I have a 2012 accent that is currently in the shop. On a scheduled mainenence visit I was told the tires were wearing to quickly. They replaced the tires and the rear axel. But noticed my one tire was still sitting on an angle. They just replaced the wheel barrings and I am waiting to hear from the service manager. Apparently they still need to do tests and measurements. Which leads me to believe they still don’t know what is causing the alignment issue. Overall the service at the dealership has been outstanding but it’s frustrating not knowing what’s wrong with my car.

Hyundai Accent 2012 Sedan, Hello everyone with the tire issues. I had a horrid dealership that blamed everything on the tires. Now, I have been trying to get my car into a larger dealership, that is supposedly buyer-friendly. I had several responses about how the wanted to help, then nothing after they got the details. I’ve written them, called them, nothing. I do believe Hyundai realizes there is a huge problem and is not willing to help the buyers get any satisfaction. I wish we could somehow get all of the defective car owners together on the internet, and try to do something about this issue. I will really, never, ever, buy a Hyundai again, and am counseling others not to. Oh, and by the way, my son bought a 2010 Hyundai Sonata, beautiful car, but he keeps having issues with the warning lights on his car, so it is not an isolated problem. Anyone that has any solutions, please post on this site!! Thank you!

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata that currently has 28,000 miles on it. At about 16,00 miles, I noticed a warbling sound from my tires and it has been getting louder. I purchased a lifetime wheel alignment package with balancing and rotation from Firestone as soon as I purchased the car with 14,00 miles on it. I have had this car’s alignment checked 3 times and have had the tires balanced and rotated each time. The tires are severely cupped or chopped on the inside edge.

The mechanic told me from the first time that I brought it in for alignment that everything is perfect except for the camber, which there is no adjustment for on these vehicles. It appears Hyundai tried to save a few bucks by not installing a camber adjustment bolt.

Now I’m screwed and have to put a set of new tires on that will just do the same thing in another 10,000 miles or so.

Second day after purchasing returned the car due to car pulling to the right. An alignment was competed in which it took several hours to complete.
Just this year 2012 I’ve had two more alignments as of October, 2012
and the car is still pulling, but it’s changed sides. Dealers are stealing our money along with the Manufacture.

I have same problem with 2009 and 2010 Accents. Extreme wear on inside edge of front tires . Adjusted toe 1/4 turn in on each side on both cars and will keep an eye on future wear. But after reading so many other similar complaints, I feel the problem is built into the steering geometry and no adjustment will compensate for it. The NTHSA or federal consumer protection agency will have to get involved to pressure Hyundai to engineer a fix.

(see #14) I just got my 2011 Hyundai Sonata back from the dealership. After opening a case with Hyundai and with BBB Auto-Line, I finally got Hyundai to respond to my issue with my front tires cupping/feathering on the inside. Hyundai agreed to replace the struts on my vehicle, replace the 2 new front tires, and reimburse me for the 4 new tires I recently purchased. I will drive the vehicle for 3,000 miles and then re-inspect the tires for abnormal wear.
I feel Hyundai finally did the right thing in this case and I hope this solved the problem. I just wish I didn’t have to jump through hoops and elevate this issue to BBB Auto-Line in order to get this resolved.

Hyundai said there was a recall and the alignment needed to be fixed. They fixed the alignment and the car has pulled hard to the right ever since. I have taken it back and they said this is normal. They are blaming the roads. I have a few other cars currently and they don’t have this issue on the same roads.

I am constantly correcting the steering, which is a pain on a long ride. I am always driving the car with a little pressure to the left on the steering wheel. If I relax for a few seconds, I end up in the right lane. I currently have 14K on the car.

The tires wear abnormally fast and only on the inside edge of the front tires. I have had the wheels aligned at the dealership twice and local shops two or three times as well over the last four years. The wearing seems to actually be accelerating now with brand new tires lasting me 10k miles or less. This is a known problem with accents but the dealers just claim road damage and then charge me more to “fix it”

They have always blamed the road. They did two alignments and it still pulls to the right. At all time I have to extra pressure on the steering wheel. If I relax for a second, the car starts going in the right lane. My other two cars, on the same road, go straight.

The tires are wearing out evenly but are almost bold.

Bought it used (at a dealership) with 17,000 miles on it in June ’12. Was surprised 5 months later in Nov. at 26,700 to be told that I needed two new front tires immediately due to unsafe wear. Thought this was unusual but figured I had to chalk it up to unknown prior wear/maintenance and bought the tires and alignment. In May, at 38,000 needed two back tires and figured I’m good for a bit. Now, in Sept, 10 months after buying new front tires, at 44,000 I need two new front tires again. The tread and the outside are fine, the inside is shot. Yes I drive a lot, yes the roads are not great but, in 35 years of car ownership with similar driving and the same roads I have never needed to purchase 6 tires in less than a year.

We rotate the tires regularly and have no alignment issues. The car’s design simply causes excessive tire wear. The factory supplied tires are rated at 184 mph. I replaced them twice with identical tires, each of which lasted about 20,000 miles. For my forth tire-set replacement, I chose a higher mileage tire (60,000 miles) with a lower top speed rating. Those lasted for 32,000 miles. The tire dealer said his experience with Azeras is that they are very hard on tires.

The car is on its 3rd set of tires and the front will soon be needing its 4th set. We have recently been in touch with Hyundai and have been very disappointed so far with thier response (Their reply is to set us up with an allignment with the Hyundai dealer). We have kept all of our service records, including the factory recommended tire rotation completed for every 7500 miles as well as the records for the purchase of each set of tires we have replaced. While we will comply with the response to go in for the alllignment, we are certain that this is not an allignment issue as the tires wear evenly and wear completely bald. The car, even when tires are new, drives very poorly in all inclement weather (snow, rain, wind) with the back end swaying so badly we are fearful to even drive unless the weather is clear. Even hitting a bump in the road jars the car and feels as though the back end comes up and sways. While the gas miliage has been wonderful, we feel so unsafe and are so frustrated with the constant replacement of tires that we no longer feel in our best interest to keep the car! We have attempted to trade the car only to find that we can only get less than half of what we paid 2 years ago. The alignment and an open recall (steering column airbag) were supposed to be taken care of but weren’t. “We will schedule a service as soon as we research this recall you mentioned.” says the salesman. So not having a car due to a wreck I take posession and patiently wait for the call. Pulling gets worse and tires start making a funny sound, I look at it and both rear tires have strips taken out of the rubber. Worn down so far the steel is frayed to pieces! No way that happened in driving less than 1000 miles this last month. Getting nothing but a run around so far on this “Certified Pre-Owned vehicle” How can I find the previous (original) owner to combine records and get a fix?

Once i leave my car starts making this whooping sound from the tires. I bring it back and the service manager tells me all he can do is rerotate the tires back because the tires are not use to the engine on the tires, by try to give it over the weekend and see if it stops then just cover one ear. I brought it back monday and told them to check the tire pressure the service rep goes out there and look at the tires and said they look fine then he takes his hand and put inside the tires (inner part of the tires) and tell me that my tires are chop. Then he goes on to say that it’s not a safety issue and i shouldn’t worry about I just purchase this vehicle then he goes on to say then replace your tires. I ask him fine if you all are responsible I haven’t had the car that long. I am thinking about getting the better business bureau involved. I feel like this you did a inspection on the car and no one said anything especially the manager he said the car look good he felt the tires and everything. then ford just put the car on the lot in the month of May you do a inspection on all vehicles that comes on the lot. you know that before you put on the lot. I been investigating this issue online only way to get chop tires is by alignment and suspension issues. what should i do.?

I had the front end aligned and purchased two new tires. now 3 months later I back to the same condition. I don’t think tire pros did a bad job on the alignment, however hearing about similar issues, I am not sure what options there are. I can’t afford to replace the tires 4 times a year on this car! I am the 4th owner, so I am not sure what was or was not done to the vehicle. Does the lemon law still apply even if I was not the original owner?
I probably need tire pros to help me on this to force them to replace the front struts which is what sounds like the issue is. This is clearly a camber issue. It is clear as day to the wear pattern.

I have a 2012 accent SE and at 72000 highway miles I’m on my 3rd set of tires. All the problems seem to be with the rear end as those tires get cupped and choppy in no time. Last set had 22000 miles and the rear tires were destroyed while the fronts looked good with only minimal wear, an alignment was done when these tires were installed as I was informed that this was the problem. The tire shop did confirm the alignment was off which is odd as I purchased the car new am the only driver and it hasn’t been abused. This makes no sense as the rear tires are not under power and are just like trailer tires.

In 2010 I was told that I had to have the alignment fixed. I did this a few times until 2012 when I was going in weekly to get it fixed. I have to keep buying new tires for my car because they wear out so fast! I just bought new tires 2 months ago and they are already half way worn out. Tonight I went in again to get my alignment fixed and I was told that my rear camber needed to be completely replaced. They are telling me that I have to now get my rear alignment replaced and at some point next year I need to get my front replaced. It is driving me nuts! I am now spending more money to fix my reoccurring car issue then what the car is actually worth and I really have no idea what to do. :/

The first was a factory set of Dunlop tires. The second was the same size of Dunlop tires from an independent tire dealer. Both sets of the Dunlop tires had excessive wear on the inside edge of all four tires. This is indicative of negative camber issue. The car always had a slight pull to the left. I thought the pull was due to the road having a slight “crown” for water run-off. Additionally, the tires would always loose air. I was constantly monitoring the tire air pressure to keep them properly inflated. I had an alignment done on the second set of tires. It did not help. The car still had a slight pull to the left. In addition, both sets of Dunlop tires had a loud “groaning” sound. I attributed that sound to the “racing” tread pattern of the tire tread. I just purchased my third set of tires. This time they are from Goodyear. The tires have the same factory speed rating but higher than factory load rating. Goodyear did the alignment. Goodyear also replaced the gasket on the tire stems to see if that would help with the slow air leak issue. I will follow the alignment more closely now that I know there seems to be an issue with tire alignment on Hyundai vehicles.

After reading the stories of others, I see it could be worse but it’s still wrong. I have excessive wear on back tires on inside despite rotating and balancing as directed with the right one being worse. In 4 months, between oil changes, the back right tire went from being rated a 5 to a 1. I went back to Tire Kingdom bc the expensive tires were prorated. They told me it was out of alignment and needs a shim. I brought my car to hyundai dealership and t hey told me it is in alignment and blamed me for driving too much. I questioned the fact that it wore on 1 side and was told just to have my alignment checked monthly. My issue is that if nothing has been done to my car the same thing will happen again and I’ll be buying more tires. I will continue to work toward resolution now that I know it is an issue for others too.

Four times because of the following: first time I was told cold winter ruined the tires (that was at 19K). Second time due to bad alignment…it never pulled so I didn’t know, but that is what the dealer said. Third time due to bad struts which made the tires choppy and gave the car a wobbling ride ($600 later and $380 for tires). Now I am on my fourth set and the car now pulls to the right…I am frustrated. I just had an alignment done at 70K when I put the fourth set of tires on, so not sure why the car can’t keep an alignment. I’m beginning to think the car has an issue and I have a lemon.

I had their Hankook Optimo tires that come stock with the vehicle. When i went in at 7k miles, they told me i had massive wear on my front tires and would soon need to replace them and that they recommend doing an alignment. I went to a local franchise here in Florida and had two new tires put on because i was under the influence it was my tires. I kept the new ones on the back and they have lasted fine. When i looked at the stock tires that were now in the front (only for about 5k miles because i rotated them myself at the 7k) they were almost bald and this was with 5k miles on the front. I just went in yesterday and replaced those two stock tires, purchased an alignment, and had to buy a camber bolt because hyundai did not include this bolt in their manufacturing. Im hoping the bolt is what fixes this issue. Should i hold off to see if what i performed fixes the issue or should I contact someone now about this problem?

Has had 3 wheel alignment adjustment. Still pulls to right. Hyundia has a wheel aligment problem in all models. Hyundai needs to address the problem & stop blaming road defects causing wheel alignment & tire wear. I believe the issue can be fixed by replacing the square camber nuts used on all Hyundai models with a rounded camber alginment kit which would provide alignment for camber, canster& toe. I was told if I replace canster bolts with none Hyundia issused canster nuts that my warrent would be void. The customer loses all around with this issue. Customer has to have realignment every 3 or 6 months @ $89.00+ & cost of a new set of tires 20000-30000. Notice dealer has on tire replacement signs in lobby. I have visited two different shops and have talked to my local Hyundai dealership. An alignment was done today on my car, but I was told that it might help, but wouldn’t fix the problem and that there is nothing that can be done for the the tires’ toe. I was astonished that my dealerships couldn’t do anything for my car. I was basically told to just keep rotating my tires frequently and to not spend a lot of money on tires because I will have to frequently replace them.

Apparently, according to a Hyundai employee, there are four different suspensions – the one on both of ours is intended to be “maintenance free,” therefore, there is no way to adjust or align the rear end. Of course, the rear end on one of our cars is significantly out, and there isn’t even a shim kit designed for these cars. Will never buy another Hyundai. Hyundai has been getting away with this for years. Wish there was some sort of class action suit….

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem.i see a lot of Hyundai’s but not alot of velosters and I’m having problems with the climate controls blower when it’s cold never worked on#4 high and the Bluetooth and touch screen doesn’t want to work right either when it’s cold. And I was also told by the dealer that it wasn’t under warranty.n now it’s right at 65,000 miles n there telling me since I’m the second owner my warranty is out at 60,000 miles and I bought the extended warranty and it says on. My contract that I have a warranty until 120,000 miles but it’s not a factory warranty?? I don’t understand?? The dealer I bought it from didn’t tell me that they said it was a 100,000 mile factory warranty and then I can’t get anything done with it.. no more Hyundai for me or its actually the dealers I believe….

Took it to an independent shop for a 4 wheel alignment and learned that the front wheels can not be aligned properly due to a cam bolt that can not be adjusted. Solution, I had an after market cam bolt installed to correct the alignment.

Hyundai, why did these vehicles even left the factory with an alignment that wasn’t correct?

I use Tire Kingdom for my service and they said it is a factory problem that cannot be repair or fixed and that I’m might as well resign myself to buying new tires every 20k or so..
