I just discovered my Jeep 2008 Jeep Patriot has a huge water leak through the roof after a night on rain September 21st, 2008 . I first discovered the leak from water dripping from the map lights on the morning of September 22nd. I pulled out of my parking space and heard a hug swooshing sound in the roof, then huge swishing around in in the DASH BOARD. Then I turned on the heat, and water STARTED SPATTERING OUT OF THE VENTS!! The carpet is soaked. I worry even if they can “FIX” the problem, I will have mold / and or rust. I am quite upset seeing that I saved years ($20,000 cash) for my first new car. Heading to the dealer on Wednesday.

    Seeking advice,

    Brian Murray

My 2007 jeep wrangler has leaked consistently since I purchased it brand new from Charles Hurst Group. They flew a specialist over from the states who failed to fix it what are my rights as they are offering me an 08 wrangler with 3000 miles up on it can I not be refunded as this is my second wrangler in 5 years

Yep, my 2007 patriot leaks at the rear dome light. I have taken it in about 7 times for repair and they can’t fix it. I think I will try to fix it on my own now, as it has become inconvienient to take it in. Say I am able to fix it…then my next problem is getting Chrysler to replace my headliner, as it is destroyed due to the water leak and dirty mechanic hands touching it and taking it down so many times. I have over 36,000 miles now. It started leaking somewhere between 35,000 and 37,000 miles, but the dealership ecided to sill cover it under warrenty. I haven’t paid anything for their failing attempt to fix the leak. Any help is grealy appreciated.

Now I dont feel so bad we purchased a 2008 patroit and the rear dome light fills the back up with water. After many failed attempts they called the Rep and boy did they fix it welding plates ,smering goop and it look like they painted it with a broom, they fingered up my headliner and marred up my plastic WHAT A MESS. I refused it and its been setting at the dealership for 11 months. Can you help even with there chapter 11?

I bought a 2008 Jeep Patriot June of last year. After a very heavy rain this spring, water began pouring out of the map light as I drove. The car is now back at the dealer for a third attempt at a repair, after two subsequent rain/leaking events. The dealership service department denies any knowledge of Jeep vehicles having this issue. This website would suggest otherwise. The Lemon Law in Kansas, where I live, requires nine attempts to fix a recurring problem. I’m afraid my car will be completly rotted out by then. What can be done?

              • #7 LemonLaw says:

Hi Denise: You are mistaken about the Kansas Lemon Law. It requires only four repair attempts. Check out https://www.lemonlaw.com/state-lemon-laws/ for more info. Give the lemon law firm of Krohn & Moss a call at 1-800 US LEMON.

And the dealer can say whatever they want… we accept at least one leaking Jeep claim every day!

                Good luck and safe driving.

I noticed water in the car after 3 days but could not figure out where it was coming from. What can you do in Ontario about this problem? We do not have Lemon Laws here I belive?? Please Help.

                                  To whom it may concern,

My son just bought a Jeep Patriot about a month ago during a hot and dry spell in Texas (Houston), and then it began to rain. As a result, water gushed out of the dome light, and all over the front of the SUV. It left puddles of water in his vehicle, and, as a result his radio went out on him. Tomorrow he will be going to the dealership to talk with them about the problem. I have researched the problem on Google, and to my surprise have discovered that the 2007 and 2008 Jeep Patriots have a history of water leakage. Given such a history, it seems unpardonable to me that the problem has not been fixed in the 2009 Patriots!!!

I realize that for the Lemon Law to apply in the State of Texas, one must have made four attempts to have had a vehicle repaired, but my question is: Based upon your experience, has the Lemon Law been effectively used in the case of water leakage in Jeep Patriots?

I’m ready to Lemon Law my 2007 Wrangler, soft top. The first time I took it in for leaks I was told, that’s due top a “design defect”. The 2nd and 3rd visits resulted in cheap foam tape being applied around the door frame (described as new seals) and header bow that was warped was replaced. The leaks stopped until the first time I took the top down and put it back up, the foam tape fell off too. I tried following the directions in the owners manual and watching the online videos, there are no secret tips on how to insure a fit that would prevent leaks.
My warranty is up in 6 months and I can’t stand having when seats when it rains and a constant mold smell anymore. The annoying wind and water leaks are only getting worse, i’m really disappointed. Jeep blew it when they rolled out the new design in 2007, the quality and durability I expected was totally compromised. This is my 5th Wrangler, the new design and features, combined with a great price can’t disguise the quality and build issues. I hope they have the bugs worked out in the 2010 models, I’d like to get a new one.

To make matters worse, I had to Lemon Law a Pontiac G6, 6 months before I bought the Wrangler. It had a 4 panel, glass sunroof that leaked like crazy. Went back and forth with GM for 6 months. Once I got the BBB involved in Florida, they agreed to take the car back and gave me a full refund. The case never became public record and GM resold the vehicle. I know this because the new owner took the car in for service and my contact info was still on record. The dealer was in Texas and sent me a letter asking if I was satisfied with the work they had done. Who knows but I’m sure it was on the leaky sunroof.

I have an 08 Patriot North and the front map light is leaking. It has been in to the dealer 2 times already and I’m taking it in for the 3rd time.

I just got word from my State’s (Florida) Lemon Law division, and they said although I have met the criteria for number of attempts to get my leaks fixed, that it has been over the 24 month period so my claim is being denied.
It seems I am getting screwed because I gave the dealership several additional opportunities to fix the problem. Also, it doesn’t rain every day so it takes a while to find out the problem wasn’t fixed; additionally, the dealership only takes vehicles with “leak issues” in for service on Wednesdays.
Any suggestions what I can do from here?

Unfortunately, that is the problem with handling it on your own through a state program. There are so many interpretations and you do not have an experienced attorney and/or expert assisting you. I would visit https://www.lemonlawamerica.com/ and click on your state to find an attorney who can help. I would not give up.

To all others: there are several ways other than Lemon Law that an attorney can help you seek remedy. Don’t give up, Jeep has a flawed product and know that most people will just give up instead fighting them.
                                            Thanks again…….

I had the same leaking problem with my 2008 Patriot, wter pouring in from the front and rear maplights.

After the third attempt (and mentioning lemon law) the dealership found a service “note” which, although not even a service bulletin, suggested that they take a closer look at the tolerances around the sunroof as well as replacing the gasket surrounding the sunroof.

After replacing this gasket – no more leak!!!

The fact that it was in three times before they fixed the problem is unsatisfactory and you may be entitled to monetary compensation to reflect the breach of warranty. Call 1-800 LEMON LAW if you would like to discuss the matter.

Yes, my 2008 Wrangler leaks at the removable roof panels. The water collects in wells in the speaker/light attachment, so doesn’t leak out right away. When the little wells fill up, the water then leaks out on the seats and collects under the floor mats. This really sucks, as I don’t see how they’re going to fix this—-caulk the panels in? Why would Jeep keep making and selling cars that are defective?

I don’t know yet if this last time they fixed right because it has not rain yet. I will find out today because is going to rain. My carpet is getting stains and it has a odor I will want to know if there is something I can do about that?

They did, but only on the passenger side, and it was missing a piece under the counsel. In the beginning of 2010 I found it was leaking in the back and had been for some time. It had begun to have a musty smell. Come to find out Jeep Galeana in Florida had only fixed the leak that was most obvious to me. As there was 5 inches of water in the front floor board. Now considering I did not design this mess of a automobile I assumed (ha) they fixed all the leaks they had been having problems with (almost as in a recall situation). Boy am I dumb. Now I can not get them to fix this problem for me. I even called Crysler and they told me since my car is out of warrenty now there is nothing they can do. I feel scammed. I will never buy another Crysler again!!! I will be sure to tell everyone I know. Now beyond that, what recourse do I have? Can anyone give any advise?

I have a 2009 Jeep Patriot- beautiful car until my Transmission Sensor went at 28000 miles- and barely one year old…
They fixed it- I was happy…

I also purchased an extended warranty – so when my Front End started feeling missaligned I took it in at 38000 miles to find out that the work would not be covered under the service contract which was sold to me as a continuation of the factory warranty- not so I now know…
So when my car started leaking through the map lights 3 weeks ago I called customer service to find out if they would cover the repair of the leak…waiting to hear back.

How does a 1.5 year old car leaking into the interior have anything to do with mileage? Shouldn’t that be covered under poor craftsmanship?

I have over 70,000 miles, but the dealership is covering this because the issues rose while it was under warranty. They indicated that the tubes are clogged. This has been the reason at least two other times. One time it was the windshield, which they sealed. Always excuses. Do we have any options under the Illinois lemon law, if the leak happens again, since it was caused during the warranty period?

The problem was the roof was not soldered properly, they had the car for two weeks. This happened about a year ago and I have not had a problem since.

                                                                            • #38 Jessica says:

Water leaked through the dome light only a month after I bought it brand new! Since then, the dealer has cleaned out the drainage tubes, replaced the seal on the outside, and even replaced the entire sun roof!!! This has been such a pain and I will probably never buy from Chrysler again…

                                                                              • #39 Lance says:

Have taken it to the dealer twice. Both times they said the drain holes were clogged. I have already cleaned the drains three times myself and the leak continues. For the first time since purchase the vehicle has not been driven for two weeks and when I went to move the vehicle the other day I couldn’t believe my eyes…the entire vehicle was completely covered with mold and mildew from front to back. I took it back to the dealer today for complete mold and mildew mediation and to have the leak repaired. Also in the past I have had a past with water sloshing around in the dash. What is the Lemon Law in the state of Alabama, does anyone know what it is?

I was lucky, as soon as found out it was a Jeep-Chrysler endemic problem I sold the car. I guess american auto makers are not learning the lesson. I bought a Honda Pilot and I don’t have to worry about any thing except Gas and oil changes.

Most of the cases we have taken with the problem have either received thousands of dollars in cash to assist with such a trade, or a full repurchase (everything they spent on their car including taxes, tags, finance charges and down payment). That’s why the Lemon Law is so great.

When it rains, her drivers side carpet gets soaked. We looked all around and couldnt find any leaks anywhere. Its past its warranty so taking to the dealer didnt work. We were hoping to find some answers as to how to fix it. I dont think this is just a Patriot or Wrangler problem. I have a friend tell me that her 2008 Commander is leaking water in the same area. If Jeep has this problem, why cant we just take our vehicles too them and have them fix it or buy it back.

It pains me to become aware that it is so wide spread!!! With the exception of my 94, my 98,99 & 01 have all suffered from the same issue of passenger side foot well leaks… I endured replacing heater cores to solve their problems but to no satisfaction. I am extremely relieved to see these comments posted here. In my experiences… the leaks have come from the fire wall where the heater core drainage tube became clogged and back dripped into the car. Now, with my 01, I dont have a clue!! When I see the new Jeep GC commercials where that Jeep drives through that 3 foot puddle… I shudder!

Took it back to the dealer so many times to fix the problem and finally was so aggrevated and pissed off, I sold it back to the dealer for pay off. I lost alot of money on the deal!!!!! Needed to sell the jeep for more money, but I felt in my heart it would be dishonest to sell a vehicle to someone else with the history of the leaks and make someone else regret buying it. Been to Jeep dealership in Benton, Arkansas 3 times now. They act like it’s the first leak they’ve ever seen. This last time they replaced the glass in the sun roof and creased the head liner before returning the vehicle to us. After calling us and telling us that it was fixed and ready for pick up, it poured water out all over the repair man that pulled the car around for my wife. Today our rearview mirror fogs over from damp carpets that will not dry unless we are in a drought.

******I’m sure now it’s where the roof edges meet/are-sealed to the verticle sides of the cab (window walls if you will). Might be wrong, but will post here, saving this forum to fav’s, if this is right. We’ve all had the warrant work with DD’s (dealer dummies/add crooks), so I have to look elsewhere. **Gaskets between roof edge and verticle panels must come off, nylon hard like comb etc. to pick out (they whistle while driving if not in right, if like mine!) – and somewhere along the frontoback run under them I’m guessing is where an improperly masticked hole will be. Me doing it or this bodyshop place I know where the guy is not a crook, is going to do it.

I have been told from dealership that they can’t fix but replaced every seal anyway & am now down to 3 leaks together with very sloppy seals making it hard to slot hardtop panels back on.

Shortly after I bought it, found out when it rained water would pour straight down from roof onto floor board. When I complained to my salesman I was told they all do that and when you have a Jeep its “for the tough”. Now it is leaking around the vent on passenger side as I have discovered is a common complaint. Last year when I went in for one of 4+ recalls, I was told it was a design defect and there is no fix (for the leak off the roof straight on to the carpet). The “suggestion” was when it rains just vacuum the water out of the carpet with a shopvac. Right! I now have pulled the carpet out because of the mold smell. Now, to quote the salesman, I am really tough. I also have now received 3 “Urgent” recall notices in rapid succession for the same problem, last 2 on bright pink cards. Being a 2007, my Jeep is now out of warranty. So I am f%@&#d!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and by the way, I have a hard top and a soft top, and leak happens with both. Any suggestions? I doubt I can use Lemon-law, because warranty is out????????????

There are no visible signs of how the water is entering the car. The Jeep has a sunroof but the liner is try, same with the rear door moldings. I’ve had up the 3 inches of standing water in the drivers side back seat foot area. The dealer says its the roof moldings or the welds under it and had already ordered the parts right after I called for service. I hope this does the trick. I’ve only have 26,000 miles on it and since I rarely use the back seats I have no idea how long this has been going on for. I hope this helps others out there.

I paid over 30,000 dollars for the vehicle. It has the built in GPS, cd player, and is fully loaded. I have not been contacted from Jeep about this issue. But I was told they have had many issues with this. I am highly disappointed about this. The water is coming from the inside light. It then runs everywhere including the GPS system and dash. I don’t think this is far at all that they did not contact me about this issue knowing it could happen. I paid a lot of money. I am still under warranty but what would happen if I wasn’t? How do I know if anything else is ruined…is that still covered? My GPS and Sirrus Radio shut off today because of it. What steps should I take? I called Jeep and talked to them and they had nothing to say.

I am so sick of all of the run around and the headaches this problem has caused. I do not know what to do at this point. They told me that they can not fix the problem if they can not find the leaks even though I have brought it into them on 3 separate occassions when it was leaking and they still can not find the problem! I hope that there are recalls on this as it seems like I am not the only one with issues about this problem. I hope they realize how many customers they will loose when it comes time to buy a new vehicle!

I have never had a brand new car and really wanted the Jeep Patriot. I wish I had waited but was desperate for a car since the one I had was old and always breaking down. My car is parked on a slight incline at my home and leaks after a downpour once I pull out of my driveway. It has leaked from the dome light, around the sunroof, the floor where the back seat is on the passenger side now gets drenched with water, and found water where my tire is stored. My leaking started about two weeks after I recieved my car – beginning of summer during rainy season. I have taken my car in several times and I also get the whole lame excuse of…you have to clean out the lines and sunroofs are notorious for leaks. Yeah, right! I need to take my car in again but don’t have time to leave my car up there for days while they work on trying to figure out the issue yet again. I would never recommend this car to anyone and am disappointed with how this has been handled. They should not be pushing out cars when they haven’t got the technology and engineering of the car corrected.

I even had him price a hard top ($3,000.00) thinking that might be better. The last 2 days have seen heavy rainfalls here and the rugs and seat are drenched. The first time the water poured in through the map light. Dealership claimed they couldn’t find a leak. This time, my driver side and driver side backseat carpet is under almost an inch of water. Can see water coming in from under the visor and where the plastic meets the roof on the driver’s side. I have the skyslider but it’s shut properly. Always wanted a new Jeep and I have to say I am completely disappointed.

I contacted a Lemon Law Attorney however, they could not help me because when I bought the car I used a friends and family discount and apparently in the discount clause it states that you must go through Chrysler on your own with out an attorney if you have any problems. It was a very time consuming process but after the 8th time of being in for service I demanded a buy back because the dealership did not know what to do further and they have tried every thing possible. I even took it to several different dealerships and they could still not solve the problem. The buy back process was also very very slow and I had to keep calling to follow up with them. I worked with a buy back company in Texas who was hired by Chrysler to kind of be the mediatior. She was very helpful in getting all the paper work together as the dealership just did not care as they were not getting credit for my car. Trust me it took several months for this process to go through, however I did win persay. I am still not sure if it was worth it in the end with all the headache but at least I was able to get into a new jeep with out a moonroof so I did not have to worry about any more leaks. I would suggest sticking to this problem and constantly calling the dealership for follow ups when they have your car and document every conversation and message left to try and protect yourself and the pricey investment that you made.

My transmission needed to be completely replaced at 3 years and 9 days…yes 9 days past the bumper to bumper warranty but NOT past the mileage…only 32000 miles on the car. Then I find out that the power train warranty does not cover the ‘type’ of transmission that is put in the Jeep Patriots. How convenient. After fighting with the dealership, Jeep, and Chrysler they agreed to cover $4000 of the $4500 cost. Still irritated, I paid the $500 because it was better than paying all of the cost, but I still felt that there was NO reason for a 3 year old car to need a new transmission when it is only used to go back and forth to work. 8 months later I noticed some noise in the front end. I took it in to have it looked at and it needed to have both front ball joints replaced and the left front tie rod end. At this time the car is 4 years old and has 42,000 miles on it. Jeep apparently does not make just the ball joints so you have to replace the entire control arm on both sides….basically a repair of about $1000 in parts alone. Needless to say I was furious that a car which is only 4 years old has needed so much fixed already that I decided to trade it in and stop sinking money in to it. The first transmission only lasted 3 years so I was NOT taking a chance that I would need to replace it again 3 years later. I hope that this helps anyone who is car shopping or considering buying a 2007 Jeep Patriot. DO NOT buy it! I have never been so relieved and happy then the day I got rid of that car….and I will NEVER buy another Jeep again.

He ordered ,then replaced ,the roof rail moldings running the length of the car on both sides . That did the trick . However I now , during heavy rains, have water coming onto the dash and the thru the dome light. I did have this problem the day I test drove the car nearly 4 years ago but not since. Strange or what ? Since it’s been past the 3 year period I’m debating as to whether I should even take it back to the dealer. The service manager who fixed the rear seat leak is gone and his replacement is a bit of a @$#%& .

Of course it is no longer under warranty and I’m concerned that this will result in a major fianncial headache for me. What are our rights? If this appears to a problem across the board isn’t the automaker required to at least meet us half way on the issue?

That is why it is so important to bring these matters to the dealer’s attention as as possible. It is highly unlikely that Chrysler will offer any type of silent warranty in this situation, but it is worth asking. Contact your selling dealer and ask to speak to the service manager. f you get nowhere, ask for the general manager.

The dealer has had the Jeep for 3 days now and “replaced most of the seals” and they say it still leaks. The jeep has not been in for three seperate services although they have had it three days for the repair and it looks like they may have it in longer. Please advise.

Mold clogs the tubes after years of wetness. Hence, the same solution (below). A/C drain tubes may take 10-12 years to clog from mold, as opposed to only 4 years on a Commander.
SOLUTION: BOIL HOT WATER AND BLEACH (I DID 50/50 MIXTURE) IN A COFFEE POT (FOR EASY POURING LATER) – (you can wash it with soap later) – AND GENTLY POUR INTO THE FRONT TRAY IN THE SUNROOF (Do BOTH sides). THE HOT WATER AND BLEACH WILL UNCLOG THE DRAIN TUBES that go down the A-Pillar.
You can buy 1/4″ clear tubing from Lowe’s and you can work this down about 3 feet into the tubes that start at the sunroof corner drains. (One each side.) This actually partially unclogs the drain tubes. I also ran the several feet of the other end of the clear tubing into the hose of my shop vac and covered the vacuum hose with my hand so the little tube would have suction on the other end. It sucked water out and gets the hot water/bleach mixture working faster when you use that afterward.
If you don’t use the tubing, the hot water still works, it just takes a minute or so to start working.
I put a garden hose on it at full blast for several minutes and now . . . NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER.
BACKGROUND EXPLANATION. What happened is that after several years the mold blocks the drain tubes. Hot water and bleach fixes that. But when the drain tubes are blocked, when the reservoir tray below the sun roof fills up, the rain water flows over the tray and down the A-pillar, which is why it comes out the bolt covers in the A-pillar grab-handle. It soaks your carpet and it also is getting your wiring wet behind the plastic down by your feet. USE A SHOP VAC to dry out the carpet more quickly.
Rain, car washes, etc. will always leak water through the sun roof seals. Once I used the bleach down the sunroof tray corners, the tray will no longer fill up with water – it now drains super fast.
This is a procedure that should probably be repeated annually.
People on this post were saying crud gets down the drain tubes, but that can’t be since the sunroof window weatherseal isn’t big enough for that.
I had resorted previously to trying to supplement the weather stripping, but that is not the way this car is engineered and you’ll never solve the issue that way.
One person even said he was having some stopper at the end of the drain tubes removed (???) but there are metal plates under your car and that is not the correct approach, if even feasible.

They had replace the w/s the day before I picked it up, due to a crack I pointed out when test driving it.

Removed the seats, all carpeting, dry it out and treated it to avoid mold issues.

I noticed a wet carpet in rear after a rainstorm. I brought it in twice to correct the problem and now it seems to be corrected. (all under the 30 day dealer warranty) They seemed to have the Jeep longer than I did. The second time I went to pick it up, I noticed the front floor on the drivers and passenger side was wet. They shop vac sucked it up and said maybe the door was open when they were spraying and checking the back door leak. The 30 day warranty expired when it was in the second time. Now, week later, it has finally rained again and the floor in front is wet again. I did point this problem out to them when I was in on the second time. Am I still under warranty?? I did buy the extended 2 year warranty for $1600 also. I don’t think I should have to use it and pay a deductible. Do I have any rights?? Thanks in advance. Bill

THE HOT WATER AND BLEACH WILL UNCLOG THE DRAIN TUBES that go down the A-Pillar.

I’ve read dozens of forums for attempts to fix the problem. Some have helped a bit (tho not the waterfall that happens when you open the doors), but the common leak over the door handles is still there. I didn’t pay good money for a smelly, wet car. My wife has told me to take it back to the Ford dealership where we got it, but with it being a 5 year old vehicle, I didn’t know if that would do any good. There’s an actual jeep dealership nearby…should I take it to them? I’ve heard so many stories that there’s really no fix, it’s just something you have to deal with, but that just doesn’t seem right. Does the Lemon Law work for someone in my situation? Am I better off just trying to deal with it myself? Should I take it to a Jeep dealer, or where I actually bought it. I’m frustrated but unwilling to give up my Jeep. Ugh.

From the very beginning rain would come in through the seems of the 3 piece freedom top. I brought it to the dealership to get it fixed. It was “fixed” same day. I was told the problem was fixed. I asked if the leak would happen again (I previously owned a grand am for 10 years that had a leak from the start and never truly went away). He laughed at me and said he “didn’t say that”. Now I seem to understand why he laughed.

I just don’t have the confidence that this problem will be fixed. Do you have any early advice for me? Give me tips to proceed?

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty with a Sunroof. Weel it did have a sunfoof until it BLEW OUT while driving down the highway. Now there’s just the frame opening that is all rusty & corroded. I never noticed any leaking except after going through car wash. Sometimes a little water came in if I open the roof, but that seemed natural. Well it apparently had been leaking inside the sunroof frame. And know I see many complaints on the web that this is a common thing with Jeeps. And of course Jeep is disputing it.

When I hit the breaks at the second light, about two ounces of water dribbled onto the middle of the dashboard. Sensing my disappointment, the saleswoman said: “Must have been some condensation.” I stifled a laugh. More water leaked through within two miles. Living in Oregon, this doesn’t cut the mustard. I guess I like my Toyota even more now…

Many of our clients have received complete repurchases, new cars or thousands of dollars to reflect the diminished value of the car. You will never get this from any class action. It is essential that you opt-out of any class action suit to protect your individual rights and ensure you get the maximum recovery you are individually entitled to under the Law. Today is the third time its been in the shop for a water leak. I am under the impression that this problem is not going to go away. I love my jeep and already sunk $$ into rims, tires and a lift kit. I dont want another Jeep unless its the same color which they only made rescue green in 07/08. What can be done to rectify this problem. The jeep has been leaking since 2000 miles. I have taken it back to dealer three times its currently there now… this time the final attempt the manufacture is attempting to fix the leak. I have filed for arbitration. The next step is to wait for it to rain (or use a garden hose) and see it it leaks. If it does…. I am to call the manufacture and explore my options. According to the representative they would like to keep me in a Chrysler or Jeep product. I’m not sure… I want my money back and buy Japanese. I really tried to purchase an American product and this is what I get in return.

Works pretty good.

I had them repaired at least 3 times while under warranty. The leaks have gotten worse, and water is now pooling in the rear of the Jeep. My warranty has since expired, and the dealer agreed to cover the last repair at no cost to me since it was a problem I have had while it was under warranty. Well today my Jeep is back for the SAME problem. I was away for 2 weeks, there was heavy rain here in CT for several days. My rear floors are a POND and my Jeep stinks like a musty wet basement. I dont expect my dealer to continue sinking money into this repair since it appears to be an unfixable issue. I have reviewed CT’s lemon law and my understanding is it’s too late for me to file anything since I have owned my vehicle over 2 years and because it has not been out of service for a collective 30 days. However, I am concerned that this problem will lead to bigger problems down the road and I dont know what, if anything I can do. I want to keep my Jeep and I dont want it to leak, smell or be a mildew fiesta. Suggestions? 🙁

My daughter lives in CA, just purchased a certified 2010 Jeep Liberty from a Jeep dealer in NY. All seemed good, until she received the Jeep yesterday. She noticed some dampness on the front passenger floor and figured it was from recently cleaned carpets. Today, she notices that the rear passenger floor area is soaking wet, and it has seaped over to other floor areas! At first we thought maybe the car transport company left a window cracked and rain got in, but now after researching similar complaints on the internet, I’m not so sure! Nothing else in the car was wet, and it seems like the car is wet from underneath the carpets, not the other way around, which leads me to believe that an open window was NOT the problem. Oh and yes, it does have a sunroof. Really not sure where to go from here, or what her rights are? The car does have several months left on the warranty, plus supposedly an additional 3 mos. since it’s certified. We are still in shock and not sure what to do next. Haven’t even had time to contact a local dealer yet, but the car detailer she took it to today told her that all of the carpets should be replaced! Since it just arrived accross country through the rain, I have no idea how long the water has actually been in the car. Anybody with advice on what we should do is greatly appreciated!

Once I used the bleach down the sunroof tray corners, the tray will no longer fill up with water – it now drains super fast.

I have a 2008 Patriot. I’m in Oregon, and I think it is too late for me. I do have a claim into the Chrysler Service Contract department to see if there is anything they can do to help.

The right side of my car was a small pond as well, and it is stinky! The roof liner is also soaked above the door on the passenger side.

It has been less than a year since the last time I brought my jeep in for this same problem.

They tested the AC hose and that was fine. Unfortunately, there is still a lot if water underneath the carpets itself that soaked into the padding. The dealership is supposedly trying to get the carpets and padding replaced under warranty, and they are waiting for a response from jeep. In the meantime, the water soaked padding is sitting directly on my jeep floor, doing who knows what damage? It has been almost two weeks since jeep assessed the vehicle, and we are still waiting for resolve. Any suggestions?

Funny thing is that there is no mention of this in the maintenance section of my owner’s manual. And how am I to know when the drains get plugged up?

I took it back to the dealership and they told me it is completely normal for a sun roof to leak, it happens often and there is just nothing you can do to stop it but after arguing this is a BRAND NEW vehicle and ur telling me its “normal” for it to leak they assured me they would check it out. My vehicle stayed at the dealership for approx. 1 week before they called to notify me that it was fixed and ready to be picked up, once we arrived I immediately checked the floor for any wetness it was now drenched worse than when we left it, and by the way it had rained while it was up there, so I told the manager it must have leaked again he told me it has to happen at least 3 times then would be considered a lemon. They kept it another almost 2 weeks and only documented it as one incident and it is now leaking again. I have a hard time getting ahold of the manager and I’m worried about the water causing further problems since it is in the light.

We see about 100 plus inches of rain every year. My freedom top is leaking on my 2008 wrangler Sahara. Of course they didn’t tell me about the leak issue on my vehicle and it was a certified used vehicle that I purchased from a Chrysler dealership in Nanaimo. I am so upset because I have spent over $650 thus far and been into the body shop over 4 times due to this leak and their excuse is that they have replaced everything… Yet again I have a lot of water coming in both sides of my freedom too now… It’s worse since they attempted to fix it! Please help me! I am at a loss as to what direction to go in….

So far, so good, but then she lives in So. Cal where they don’t get much rain (lucky for her)!

Sounds like a royal pain in the … To me, and I am very skeptical if this will work long term, but I guess at this point all she can do is pray that it doesn’t happen again!

I’ll mention it to my daughter and see if she can get hers changed as well, though when she spoke with jeep just last week they made no mention of it? Maybe they’re not aware there is a fix available, or they just didn’t want to incur the cost to change them out?? I’m hoping its the former because I have to believe they wouldn’t be willing to fix her carpets at their expense and not fix the source of the problem too??

I then checked the screws which were a tad bit lose but not lose enough to cause such a big leak. I then tightned the screws as much as possible (they are had to unscrew now) and it continues to leak. I know that if i bring it in to jeep they will tell me there is nothing they can do because i am no longer uner warranty. this leads me to the question of what should i do? is there any way to stop this? ( i have a navigation in my car i am worried the leak will eventually damage) i also do not like the idea of having a moldy smell in my jeep…ANY SUGGESTIONS???!

It is extremely disturbing to have this happen after spending so much money on a vehicle. I have 2 little children and having mold growing in my car would be hazardous not to mention disgusting! I just don’t understand if this is an issue with the Jeep, why the manufacturer would continue to sell a defective design and risk diminishing their credibility? Lets see what happens after the next rainfall. I live in NYC and i believe the lemon law states i need to give the dealership at least 3 attempts at correcting this problem? We shall see.

My first leak was on July 23rd, brought it in to be “fixed” on July 25th. On August 1st it rained in NYC and guess what….it also rained in my Jeep once again. I am bringing it in to be serviced the 2nd time on August 5th and hopefully someone at the service dept will know how to fix this problem. I really don’t understand how Chrysler can make these cars that are $40K and have these water leak issues. So disappointing!

Today, 12 Sep Chrysler called and told me they are replacing the Jeep. They found the issue on the 5th service visit, the holes for the door brackets were drilled 3mm larger than specifications. This is said to have happened on the assembly line. So suggest to your service department to check it out.

I’ve taken it in to have it fixed but they can’t seem to find the problem. In the mean time everything in the cargo area is getting wet. So disappointed in Crysler. Nothing worse than a lack of caring about their product.

I had to have the headliner replaced just in October, dealership says it was the seal around the sunroof, but I know it was the bad design they used to get rid of the excess water, the small tubing. I had a very bad water stain just above the drivers side window. Now in December I have a water stain about 3 in. above the back window and all the way across.

I’ve taken in 7xs and is still leaking and they want me to come back in for 8th x but why?? the outside water leak person can’t seem to fix it so why bother.. First they said sunroof gasket, then roof rail gasket , then antenna and all 7 times re-seal..but still doesn’t stop .. first stain was passenger side front headliner above pillar, 2-7 x has been back cargo area top trim plastic piece ( left seam) and now the drivers side headliner above pillar stained.. I have been trying to deal with Jeep customer care rep but all she says is.. its out of warranty or take back to dealer for 8th time and that the dealerships are the service centers for jeeps so there is no plant or repair shop to fix it.. My jeep is under 29,000 miles and mint cond. no dents , dings, accidents.. runs great.. but I guess they forgot to tell me about the built in shower option… Sad, but true… it prob would have a better chance of getting fixed if it were in an accident…All I can say to readers or perspective buyers… DO NOT BUY A JEEP AND I wont mention dealership location buy don’t get serviced or buy from VA (DC area) dealerships…… Jeep should stand behind their product and make right a customer who has paid for a fix, but seems unlikely to be able to fix , that’s prob. why they discontinued the Liberty in first place.. REPEAT.. DO NOT BUY A JEEP…

I live in VA, I purchased a brand new 2014 patriot 2 months ago. with in a week it was leaking water through dome light in cargo area. took to dealer, never given a loaner or anything. had the vehicle about 4 days, was told it was leaking from antenna. claimed to have fixed it. well another hard rain and it seems its leaking worse. Off to second trip to dealer. was told they can only get me a rental they will pay for, but I have to pay a $100.00 deposit. and take time off work to get to enterprise rental company before they close. This is unfair, this is a brand new vehicle. I commute an hour to work and need my car.

I have had multiple leaks in my car within the 1st month of owning it. I have had the seals changed around the doors as well as the top. I definately think its unfair that Jeep will not address this problem. I have also had the water pump changed as well as something with my axel in the rear. I feel like its just one problem after another. I only have about 3000 miles on it. I have had my jeep in the shop for weeks at a time. So frustrating.

The top leaks. Both speakers are now toast. 1 has already been replaced before. The have changed the seals twice. It still leaks. We have only had the driver and passenger tops off of it once, because we don’t want to exacerbate the problem. It is apparent that the dealer doesn’t want to do anything about it. They tried to get us to trade up. Really?

This comes as I was just about to take it in because the molding around the rear window on the tailgate has about completely fallen off, the knob for the heat/air position will not turn all the way to the right to the defrost only position when the car is cold. AND the jeep has been acting very strange when going down the highway and the traction control is stuttering in a way when accelerating on wet roads. I have not owned this vehicle for a year yet! The dealership pick up the jeep this afternoon and are going to attempt to fix it. I am just trying to be proactive if/when this becomes a bigger issue. I am in located in Michigan.

I drove it for 3 days and I notice water on the drivers foot rest. I took it in on Friday…. But the service person told me to take it back on Monday. I dropped off the Jeep on January 19th. I have not received it yet. The computer short out. So they order another one. They replaced the seal on the drivers doors because it was leaking from there… But it continued to leak…. So they replace the seal from the windshield… And it still leaks and worse….. They replace the seal on my hard top….and it still leaks… So they took it to a body shop too see if they could find the leak and they had no success… It been 3 weeks already and they still are unable to fix it…. Barely 3K miles on it. The FIRST time i took it in, the driver side floorboard was under an inch of water. After they had it a week, they blamed me saying i must have left the window open.

This time, it in the shop for 20 days! TWENTY!!! i got it back today. After they basically took the front end apart and put it back together, they say it is fixed. I dont believe it.

My Jeep is leaking as well. When it rains, water drips on my feet while driving which could be dangerous as the first time I felt it, it caused me to jerk as this was unexpected. Now it has gotten worse, I notice that when it rains my drivers side mat/floor board get soaking wet! Smells after it dries/Not too happy!

Just noticed this morning during a heavy rain that it was also leaking from the back window and driver side door. First time i took it in, they said the freedom top needed to be screwed tighter, second time they claimed they couldn’t recreate the problem, so I went to the dealer this morning in the rain while it was leaking so they could see it and they said they could get parts but that once a wrangler leaks it probably will always leak. So does this count as 3 times since the first 2 they didn’t do anything about it? Also, what if there is mold or damage due to the leaking that doesn’t show up until after the 32000 mile warranty is up? Like all the water that leaked into the CD slot from the roof? So Do I have to have three actual repairs done or just take it in three times?

It appears to be getting in through side pillar. Sunroof drains ok.

Both the drivers side and passenger side my passenger side floor is soaked and water seems to be coming from the top or side where handles are above also wet under mirror on passenger side. Is this something that would be covered by a jeep dealer or has there been a recall about this problem.

Every time a leak appeared, we would take it to the dealer for a fix. We were always told it was caused by “a clogged drain tube”, and that it was a “maintenance issue”.

The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it stayed for over three weeks. They decided to replace the entire sunroof mechanism without first giving us the cost… The service guy sent us a TXT message saying that he was going to try to get it fixed at no charge. Instead, we are now told the vehicle has been “detailed inside and out” and the sunroof mechanism has been replaced — $1000.

The door switches for the power windows had to be repaired/replaced due to damage, and the dealer cracked the plastic switch cover — all after the warranty had run out. To this day, NOBODY has ever been able to show me where the alleged “drain tubes” are located, nor how to clean them. The service manager at the dealer tried to find the “clean-outs” when I asked, but he was also unable to find them and said I would have to some back the following Monday to talk to his technician.

I believe the dealers were told to string customers along with “drain tubes are a maintenance issue”, long enough to get past the warranty period. I believe a significant amount of electrical problems have been caused by these leaks. I believe our 2008 Commander has spent well over 6 weeks in the shop due to the leaks and repairs. I’m not even sure the “drain tubes” which the dealers claim to be a maintenance issue even exist — since even the dealer’s service manager was unable to find them after hunting for 20+ minutes.
