Defect Alert – Ford F 150 Transmission Shudder
Having a problem shifting in your Ford F-150 truck? You are not alone – we have opened quite a few cases with Ford F-150 transmission problems. There is also a technical service bulletin on the issue and it appears that Ford may not have a permanent fix. I am experiencing the hard shift from 2 to 1 and again from 1 to 2 when taking off. The TSB reflash has been performed twice, but the truck still experiences this normally when the truck is cold.
February 7th, 2011 at 2:51 pm
Have taken 2009 F-150 in for tranny problems 2 times Ford updated comp. program, and still shudders at some times.. When transmission is cold in morning and I start engine, put truck in reverse doesn’t grab for 2-3 seconds… then O.K. Also, when slowing down without braking downshifts so hard it will almost jerk you. Please let me know if these are complaints by others.

I have a 2010 f-150 purchased in November used with 12k miles from the dealer. Its just been in for third time for the same issues mentioned above with the transmission. I was told initially that ford was aware of the problem and was working on a solution(in November). Now Im being told that its normal for the transmission to act like this and that there is nothing they can do. Given the fact that the truck was purchased used, will the lemon law still apply?
April 20th, 2011 at 11:43 am
Hello Charles–While the Lemon Law may not apply, the Magnuson Moss Warrant Act might come into play. Give us a call at 1-800 LEMON LAW and we will be glad to discuss the situation with you.

I have a 2009 F150 that I purchased new in Oct 2009. In Jan 2010, I took it in due to the above mentioned issues. Ford and the dealer have tried everything. I ended up taking it in five times in 2010, and now, it is back at the dealer again. They are not seeing “codes” and are having trouble duplicating the issues, but they are there. The issue is that the truck now has 45k on it. Any suggestions?

I am in Texas and I just got off the phone with Ford and my dealership. I am more pissed now than before and I am considering filing a lawsuit against Ford. The Ford rep tells me it is illegal for Ford to offer any trade in assistance to get me out of this truck even if I want to buy a new Ford.
The dealer and I are going to try and work it out, but we are about 8K apart right now. I am going in in an hour from now. I am so sick and tired of this issue that I just want it behind me, but I am willing to file if needed.
May 3rd, 2011 at 12:18 pm
Will I need to drag the dealership into all of this?
May 3rd, 2011 at 12:22 pm
No, the dealer would not be part of the claim. Visit our website and look at our “lemon laws in other states” to find a firm that can help you.

All, mine is a 2009 with all of the issues listed. I attempted arbitration. They ruled in the favor of Ford to try to fix it again. This time (for the second time) from a Ford Engineer. All other 3 attempts were from Ford dealership. My question to all of you is to please tell me which plant your vehicle comes from? On the right lower side of the windshield there is a sticker that tells you the plant. Thank you Tony
June 8th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
We never recommend a consumer go to arbitration on their own. The State and Federal Laws provide free legal help–take advantage of it. If the arb decision was not binding, please give us a call at 1-800 LEMON LAW and we will be happy to help you.

I have a 2011 f150, 2 months old now, I have had vibration issues and ruff shifting since the day I picked it up.currently 4000kms it has been in the dealership about 4 times. they have replaced tires and have told me there is a fix in the works that is beyond dealership level. ( what ever that means)
I went out today and when I came home I noticed transmission fluid where I park. I looked underneath and grabbed a rag, and is is all over the metal support directly under the transmission.
so now I have a car that vibrates , leaks tranny fluid and now just ruined my driveway.
Im pretty pissed.
and this truck only has 4000kms on it.
I have been a loyal honda/acura customer for 15 years and Im giving ford a chance(.I needed a truck) Is this what I should expect.
October 28th, 2011 at 3:38 pm
we are having the same issues mentioned above with our 2010 F150 Lariat. The dealer too told us that Ford was aware of the problem. they ordered in a “kit” and said it was fixed…NOT, its going back into the shop on Tuesday Nov 1. I will keep you posted.
November 8th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
Please do, and give us a call at 1-800 Lemon Law if the problems still persists.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:46 pm
I had my truck in also for the shudder vibration fix.
the problem is still the same.
now 5000kms on my 2011
so far
2 x well balanced
1 wheel replaced.
transmission pump replaces.
vibration and shudder parts installed.
transmission still not right and vivration still the same.
damn you ford.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:49 pm
Im liking the look of the truck but so tired of issues. I bought a new truck to not have any issues.
if this still exists next year ford is getting this truck back and I will buy a toyota.
this is getting rediculous.
November 8th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
my truck was made april 2011 from kansas plant.
I live in Oakville, Ontario, canada
currently 5000kms owned this truck 11 weeks now and has been at dealer ship total of 3 weeks. plus numerious day drop offs.
I’m looking to hear from others in canada with same issue.
thanks

2011 F150 Lariat Limited. Shudder getting worse. Dealer at 7,500 miles. Needs reprogramming. Done and made no difference. Service rep would not admit others have same problem, but did not disagree when I said that internet full of comments regarding the problem. As the truck starts and shifts, it now thumps and has a prominant shudder that shakes the coffee cup. Said to bring back if continues.
November 18th, 2011 at 4:44 pm
John: I would take it to another authorized Ford dealer for a second opinion asap.
November 29th, 2011 at 6:33 pm
I have 2011 F150 XL, Texas Edition with the same problem and sometimes it feels like the rear-end is fixing to just kick-out. First time i took they updated the computer and this time they are telling me there is nothing wrong, probably due to 2 different drivers and different driving habits and the computer has to adjust to each. First time it worked for awhile… always lowest gears
December 2nd, 2011 at 2:04 pm
I’ve had the same shifting issues with my truck as well as a vibration issue. At 60km/hr I get a nasty vibration as well as taking off from a stop I’ll get a vibration from the rear end. Trucks been in to the shop 3 times and going in for its forth. The dealer has changed the clutch pac in the rear end twice and will be the third as well as added friction modifier to correct the issue. Every time it goes in I’m not able to tow for a 1000km. I need my truck for work and this is not reasonable.

I have a 2010 Harley Davidson Edition F150 that feels like I’m getting rear-endedwhen shifting from 1st to 2nd and vice versa. Im pissed because thats a pretty penny I spent for that truck to have these kind of performance issues before 20K miles. Now, I’m even more concerned that Im not the only one. Im taking my truck to the dealership next weekend to see what they say or can do about it. I’ll keep you all posted.

F 150 FX4 6.5 march 24 2011 Dearborn Plan
Shudder 1>2 ,2>3 and more.
Dealer change transmission support.
1 Engineer
2 Engineer
They did the TSB # 11-9-17 procedure A & B
The vibration is stil present.
2 more engineer ,they change the bloc, put spacer, road test shudder is always there.
they can not completely eliminate the shudder ,this is a conception problem .
In Canada the camvap Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan can not do anything because it’s a conception problem .
the next step will be the lawyers if I did not manage to get along on a settlement .
What I want is a truck that does not vibrate so similar with a driving shaft in one piece .short bed
Thanks

I have been at the dealership so many times for the vibration at certain speeds, I even showed the dealership a video I took from my phone showing the passenger seat vibration at 130km on the highway.
the service manager says its the tires.
(pirelli tires are horrible on these trucks).
he and I requested a change of tire for this truck from ford head office, warranty dept. ford head office said no.
case closed about tire issue they said.
Im gonna put on a set of different tires on my 20′ ford rims and see if this fixes it. if it does Im going to mediation about this issue.and fighting for tire replacement or just get out of this ford.
ford knows there is problems with these tires and transmissions on these trucks but dont wanna deal with it.
horrible customer service.
I have a 2011 f150 s crew 4×4
7000kms
never buying a ford again
December 12th, 2011 at 9:36 pm
I have a vibration at 60 km 100 km and 125-130kmph is the worst.
and I also have a very large vibration from the rear end as I first start off at every light.
and of coarse ruff shifting.
if anyone is starting a class action suit against ford canada, please feel free to contact me I will gladly join.

2011 FX2
1200 miles on it and for the last 600 its had very hard up shifts. I just took it to the dealer and I got a call saying that there techs checked out the truck and did notice the hard shifts but that it is normal or a characteristic of the truck. This is complete bs as I have driven tons of cars and not one has shifted like this. I am going in to talk to them personally in the 2 days as those techs are not there on the weekend.
December 17th, 2011 at 5:11 pm
wow, im glad im not the only one who is having trouble with shifting. I have a 2010 F150 Lariat w/14K miles. For about 3K miles i have notices hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. Has anybody heard of a fix or are we stuck with terrible transmissions?
December 19th, 2011 at 5:55 pm
Sadly, it does not appear that Ford has a fix yet. But if you have been back repeatedly, you need to look into filing a claim. Please reach out to us at 1-800 LEMON LAW.

After five (5) times and 19 days into Ford three (3) Dealerships, my 2010 F150 Platinum “continues” the transmission problems as described in the numerous comments listed here….The tranny codes and adaptive learning codes have been cleared and re-set so many times it should be doing it on it’s own automatically. The insulting dealers keep telling me that it’s just me…now with four (4) written statements from others who have driven it, I filed a complaint with the BBB who is setting an arbitration date…big deal!! I know exactly what Ford will say and most likely is an excersise in futility. As this was to be my last new vehicle and take me into the golden years, all I have is a big pain in the _ _ _, and Ford will be the center of my notifying 12,688 engineering/architectural business associates and professionals..only satisfaction I can see. QUESTION: WHY DON’T “WE” FILE A CLASS ACTION SUIT. “If” interested…list your response and I’ll move it forward.
PS: A Ford adaptive tranny specialist has told me secretly it’s a RFI leaking ignition coil interferening with the tranny electronics…and will not leave a code to track…thoughts?
December 23rd, 2011 at 6:30 am
I have a 2011 fx4. Same issue with the tranny. Hard shuttering going from 1st to 2nd or down shifting from 2nd to 1st. Been to meadowvale ford 3 times for an apparent transmission update with no fix yet. Also have an issue with the heating system. There is a loud clicking nois efrom in the dash when i turn on the heating system at start up. Originally they miss diagnosed it as a blower motor. Now they tell me it will be in the shop for a minimum of 2 weeks while they wait on the new parts. I think i got a lemon. Purchased new at yonge and steeles ford. Im in toronto. Do any lemon laws exist here??? Please help
December 30th, 2011 at 4:38 pm
Just dropped my 2010 F150 Lariat off at the dealer. 28,000 miles and transmission leak. Also went through a 2 month spell of vibration issues that resulted in four new Pirelli Tires; took three trips to get to the point of all new tires, but no charge; just inconvenience. Dealer was responsive. Vibration gone, will be interesting to see what happens at first tire rotation since installation of new tires.

Watch out people, the vibration and hard shifting is just the beginning! We took ford at their word that it was adaptive and it would work itself out… And at 112000 km, and 1200 km from our hometown, the transmission called it quits! Ford refused to help, has refused to take ownership (we have only ever gone to the dealership for services) and we had to pay out of pocket for a new tranny to be put in before we could get home for Christmas. I suggest starting a savings so that when it finally happens, you’re ready for it, because it WILL happen.
January 5th, 2012 at 10:15 am
Well I had a new drive shaft installed to eliminate rear end vibration from off he line.
Never made any difference.as for highway speed vibrations.
The service manager kept insisting it’s the pirelli tires. Ford refuses to pay for different. I footed the bill and installed michelin tires. Highway vibration still there but alote more bearable.
This is not a truck I will keep out of warranty.

I experienced that hard kick from the tranny the other day when it was cold. 1-2nd gear. I cheacked the tranny temp it was -8.once it warmed up went back to normal. I putt putt down the street in the meaning til the tranny gets some movement. And warms up.

i have a 2011 f 150 lariat and have transmission issues from 8000 miles to now, 20,000. its been in the shop 8 times. ford field tech has told me and the dealership they know they have a problem but dont know how to fix it. it was in 2 weeks ago, they have reprogrammed it 4 times and it still shifts incorrectly. their customer service bunch say it normal. if so why do the field techs tell us different? they dont want to have to replac the whole system. i know its the same issue they have in the 2010 models to. how the hell do we make them honor their warranty
January 17th, 2012 at 6:13 pm
I have a 2010 f150 51000 km last year at 10000km huge knocking from 1 and 2 gear they changed the boot on the back portion drive shaft, was good for a bit of time and now it`s back they told me nothing is wrong with it…
now there`s a yellow stain on the snow each time i leave home it`s getting really frustrating my warranty is finishing soon and the ford is going. Thanks for all the people on this site, Hope for the best.

Bought a 2009 F150 STX 4X4 March, 2009. Have had transmission issues as others have stated above. Additionally, as I slow down to about 10 mph, it would die on occasion. I took it into the dealership to have it looked at and was told it needed an update to the computer software. It was driving ok (minus the hard shifting) until I hit 28,000 miles then the transmission sprung a big leak. I took it back to the dealership to have it serviced. I was told it was just a leak in the pan and it was fixed along with a couple minor recalls. This past Sunday while trying to traverse a steep driveway that had fresh snow and ice, the truck died on me as it had done before, but this time while in 4 high and again in 4 low. Not a very good feeling as it slides back down the hill. Monday I noticed another leak under the transfer case and now gear oil under the left rear tire. I have an appointment Friday to have it looked at again, but not feeling very confident after reading the above posts.
Has anyone had issues with their truck dying while coasting to a stop?
January 21st, 2012 at 7:32 am
I bought a new 2011 F-150 last febuary, i now have about 40,000 km on it and when my transmission has been stuck in third gear for the last few days. im taking it to the shop for waranty work today.
February 1st, 2012 at 8:24 pm
I have a Ford F-150 pick-up with 82000 miles. Once again the transmission is having problems. This all started 2 years ago when the truck had only 41000 miles on the odometer. I have had 6 transmissions installed and working on number 7. These have all been rebuilt by Jasper and I am also PO at ford. I do not tow or abuse this truck no four wheeling or off roading. I bought this truck used with only 17000 on the odometer. Do I have any recourse with this truck.
February 3rd, 2012 at 11:04 am
If you have had these transmissions fixed under the Ford warranty, you very well may have a claim under the Federal Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Please call us at 800-LEMON-LAW to discuss.
February 7th, 2012 at 12:23 pm
My F-150 has the same 1-2 upshift issue as reported by other users. At best it is a very rought up shift and often slams into 2nd gear. My third repair attempt was last Thursday and the truck still has the problem. I have not gotten the repair order from the dealer yet as they want me to report back if the problem has been solved or not. I told them the problem has not gone away and they are reluctant to produce the third work order I need to proceed with a lemon law claim. Can I force them in some way to provide this? I am ready to get out of this truck.
February 8th, 2012 at 12:50 pm
If you have the date of the third visit, you should still look into your rights.
February 8th, 2012 at 1:40 pm
On my second visit to the dealership, the technician was finally able to pin-point the problem. It’s the slip yoke in the drive shaft. Supposedly this is a known issue with Ford but I was not able to find a TSB # for it. The service guys also told me that they are not allowed to give me that info, too. I don’t believe that but I still give kudos to the techs at David Stanley Ford for doing a great job and resolving my issue. Do a google search for Ford slip yoke problems and you find hundreds of posts. Pass it on to your technician next time you go back.

I replaced the pirelli tires on my vehicle with micheline tires.
the service manager says this would fix the shudder and vibration at hwy speeds.
He was wrong.
this truck shudders off the line and vibrates at 130kms on hwy
Im getting really tired of this ongoing problem.

spacers installer in rear for shudder as per tsb, didnt fix problem
1 drive shaft replaced for vibration, didnt fix problem

OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH TRANNY ON MY FORD 2010 F-150. SAME THING LIKE COUNTLESS OTHER F-150 OWNERS WITH HARSH SHIFTING,SHIFT DELAYS WHEN COLD,” SHUTTER”. THE DEALERSHIP DOES THESE MINOR TEMPORARY FIX THAT THEY KNOW AIN’T GOING TO DO JACK!!!. FORD SHOULD ACKNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE A PROBLEM AND CHANGE THE TRANNY…MY TRUCK HAS ONLY 20K MILES ON IT…HELP…WHAT TO DO?

Bought a 2011 F 150 4×4 SCRW 5.0 and after about 2k miles started having the hard shift from 1-2. Now it feels like the tranny is going to fall out it slams into gear when passing. Also coming to a stop it shifts from high gear to 1st skipping gears in between and slams into gear. Now I am really annoyed because I see this is a common problem.
March 19th, 2012 at 6:08 pm
My 2010 XL is BACK in the shop for a nasty slip from 4th to 3rd. Last year, at about 18k miles, dealer told me the “valve body” and the shift soleniod blew. Replaced. Now, at 32k, the truck is doing it, again. So upset about this truck. At 5k, the thing would stall out at lights. 5th visit to the 2nd dealership accomplished a throttle body replacement/ Nothing but problems. #1 selling truck for 30+ years, huh? maybe because we ahve to keep trading them in to get one that runs half way right!

I owned my F150 for 5 years and went through 6 transmissions. The most recent one had the same problems as the last 6 hard shifting, shuddering, and the most annoying very hard shifting when the transmission would get hot. I got tired of tying up the truck so I traded it in on a GMC last weekend.
March 27th, 2012 at 11:39 am
Took my truck to the dealership having the same problems as others have stated with hard shifting and the shudder. My truck also has a vibration at around 55 mph. After about 2 hours of them having my truck they still were unable to replicate the problem. Of course. Said it is a computer update for the transmission and it will fix everything. Now they are telling me they don’t have the code and I will have to wait for the update. I also purchased the extended warranty with the truck so hopefully they will get their a$$ in gear. No reason a truck, a vehicle designed for roughness, that only has 7k miles on it should be f@cked up already. Anyone had the issue resolved? What are my options if they can’t fix it?
March 27th, 2012 at 12:29 pm
I am hoping they provided a repair invoice which states what they told you. I would make another appointment for another Ford authorized dealer. It is not your thought that they cannot come up with a fix. Once you are in three times, I would certainly look into a lemon law attorney. Check out https://www.lemonlaw.com/lemon-law-firm.html to find a lemon lawyer in your neck of the woods.
March 28th, 2012 at 9:21 pm
We have experienced a problem with the transmission of our F150. This truck shudders through overdrive between 40-55 mph.
This Saturday, it suddenly decided to not go into reverse. Some problems I’ve seen that may cause it are the Reverse belt which is apparently also tied to the overdrive. Also the Sun shell, inside the transmission. Apparently the weld comes loose.
We brought it ionto the shop on Monday, still haven’t heard from them as to what the diagnostic has to say. They did mention however that the computer may need to be updated.
Anyone else in Alaska or Oregon having the same issue? Oregon is where the vehicle originated from.
April 13th, 2012 at 12:56 pm
I have a 2011 F150 5.0l here in Guelpg Ontario with 22,000 km on it and have been having the same problems as everyone else. Have been in to the shop twice in the past week and had the reprogramming done without any results. If Ford knew there were issues why would they continue to seel these to consumers? My dealer would know would they not? What should we do with the truck, we have only had it since December of 2011.

hi i have a 2009 stx n when its cold the transmission pops back wen it passes to drive n it also vibrates wen its on a stop n turns also whe n its doing 55 n feels heard
April 25th, 2012 at 8:29 am
Have had nothing but problems. Going in for 3rd attempt. They keep telling me its my driving habits and normal characteristics of the truck. I called corporate and they are feeding me the same story. There is something wrong with these drivelinenes. Never have I had a truck vibrate and it be normal. This is horse shit.
June 14th, 2012 at 9:30 am
I have a 2005 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4 Triton with 98,000 miles on it. I bought it used in 2007 with about 30,000 miles on it.
The transmission worked just fine (besides a fairly hard thump going into passing gear) until about 90,000 miles. Then I started noticing a thump as the transmission changed gears. Now, when I’m going 40 to 55 mph, the transmission is changing gears back and forth. I tried taking it out of OverDrive. That has calmed down the problem but can still feel it slightly.
I don’t have the money to get it fixed and it doesn’t look like Ford is willing to accept responsibility for this obvious problem. Second time I’ve been stuck with a lousy FORD lemon. You’d think I’d learn !!!!
P.S. One of the responders said it is caused by a “Slip Yoke”. Does anyone know more about this?????
July 2nd, 2012 at 12:12 pm
Bought my used 2007 F-150 XL w/ 90k on it. I have brought it back twice for the transmission slipping and bucking during the lag before an up shift from 4th to 3rd. Last time the dealer decided to change fluid and filter. Which makes no sense since this will not solve a mechanical problem. Does not throw out any codes and my luck it wont make the symptom during a test drive. SO Frustrating. It is back today for the third time and I am requesting a new transmission since they have noticed the symptom. Crossing my fingers…

I thought I was the only one but I went t to this web side looking for an answer and all I found it was about 580 transmissions complain slipping, grinding, and not developing speed. Why? Same problem I have with my 2003 F150, 5.4 I think is a bad design. For verification on this situation go to: (link is no longer valid, removed)

I have a 2010 F-150 with 38,000 miles when it was new I took it to the dealer with the transmission bumping when it downshifted they told me it was normal now that my warranty is gone it is getting worse. Is there anything I can do?

I have a 2009 f150 and also getting the run around. Does the lemon Law apply to ontario and has there been an action filed against ford. Today I paid 150 bucks for them to do nothing. I live in a remote area and break down would pose a huge safety issue.

I am not sure about a Canadian Lemon Law.

I have a 2010 F150 super crew cab that I purchased new in 2010. When truck was new we noticed a distinct vibration when starting from a dead stop and it would slowly disappear at approx. 25 mph. This very noticeable while pulling our 5th wheel trailer or if we had weight in the box (Golf Cart). Our trailer does not overload the truck, it is designed for half tons. This was brought to the dealer’s attention when truck was new. It has been in several times and a shim kit was installed which was to be an upgrade. This has not corrected the problem and apparently now Ford has a spring upgrade kit to correct this. However veh. has 70,000 Km and question that spring kit is not part of the power train. I feel it is if it effects my power train. Plus this problem was identified at 2000 km.

2009 f150 super crew xlt. 4.6 6 spd. Harsh shift 1-2. 2-1. Bump stop when braking. 2 years I been fighting for repair. Ford Canada can’t help. Dealership won’t repair trans. Ready to picket!

I have a 2012 F150 FX2 6 months old with a hard shift from 1 to 2
and 2 to 1. I have had it to dealer twice. first time they reprogramed
the transmission but did not help. Just got it out of shop 09/14/12
which was the second time, they removed the driveline and greased
it with teflon based grease. At this time it is shifting okay, but when
the grease is gone what is going to happen. Houston Texas

I have 2010 F150 Lariat Supercrew Short box, about 3 months ago it developed a vibration/shudder in the drive train at 45,000 km, have been to the dealer about 8 times so far, they changed the drive shaft out of another used truck, sent me to a GM dealer for Road Force Balance which I paid for myself, replaced rear shocks, and still I have a bad vibration coming from the mid section (water bottles vibrate badly in the drink holder between the front seats and in the passeger side door…..the service manager said that is the way these rigs drive…funny did not drive like that when I purchased it. Speaking to Ford Canada Customer Care so far not much results, what can I do?? Truck does not shift properly at lower speeds. Lonely in Canada
September 27th, 2012 at 11:38 am
2009 F150 Platinum, same issues as all. Changed the Pirelli tires, makes no difference. Still shudders.

First off I am in Canada and we have no lemon laws sure wish we did. 2011 f150 xlt bought new transmission has been out 8 times in a little over a year 30000km due to leaks shuddering clunking and seemingly endless problems with trans and driveline among numerous other problems with the truck. Asked for buy back after 3rd (and every other time it has a further issue) leak issues but dealer ignored request and will not help me out of this lemon that I am stuck making a payment on while I drive crappy loaners and can not sell the truck due to the issues with it. This is a horrible experience and I am disgusted with ford for not helping a long time customer and basically saying your stuck with a p.o.s you can’t drive or sell. Someone from ford do the right thing for once because this is rediculous beyond words!!!
November 12th, 2012 at 9:10 am
Ordered a new 2011 FX4 directly from Ford (Dearborn Assembly Plant) in Sept 2011. On Oct 5, 2011, I received the truck. The trans began shifting hard at about 4K-5K miles, but only twice. At 25,000Miles, it slammed into gear while stopped. It was so hard,, I thought someone hit me from behind. Then the entire truck began to shudder between 60-70 MPH.
1st trip to Dealer: Tech said the tires were “chopped”. Replaced tires ($800)
Shudder/Vibration still present.
2nd trip to Dealer: 2 Tech’s test drove and verified the vibration. Ford Engineering was contacted, after 3 weeks, they said to “replace Drive Shaft with a well known part”. The truck drove fine for 1 day and then began shifting into geard very hard, then vibration began at high speed (60 MPH).
This is my 3rd trip to Dealer…
Please advise?

update from #75, Gave up trying to have it repaired, Service manager was no help, kept telling me this is how they drive, funny that is not the way it was when I purchased it, Dealer gave me full selling price for the Truck, now its back on their lot, sorry for the person that buys it, purchsed new Limited Ford Edge AWD with all the bells & whistles, Ford Canada threw in Extended 5 year bumber to bumber warranty as compensation for all the trouble with the F150…They need to start replacing the Transmissions with an updated version and stop screwing the customers around, miss my Truck, going back to a Ford Explorer next year, owned three & never had any problem, could not find one this time around with all the bells that I wanted….Cannot understand Ford they know they have a major problem but are leaving the dealers on the hook to deal with the customers.

2009 F150, 6 speed auto with 38k
Same probelms as all above. 3rd time back to dealer, today. I can’t believe there has not been a recall on these problems.
MGP’s Sept. 14 , 2012 . Really hit home.
Wonder if I hit the magic number for the Lemon Law to be applied.
November 14th, 2012 at 1:22 pm
2010 F-150 XLT. Today I dropped my truck off for the 5th time for the same issue. Everytime they reflash and send me on my way, a few months later the same hard shift comes back. It feels like the drive train is going to fall out. 53000 miles on the truck. I’m in Colorado do i still have a case or have I waited to long?

This was Ford’s reply to my inquiry, apparently this is normal behavior and not an issue.
“The concern you describe may be a characteristic of the transmission. Harsh shifts can be considered characteristic in some of our newer vehicles when the right conditions are present. Transmissions like the 6R60/6R80 used in this vehicle have a very high level of adaptability, shift timing and intensity can be adjusted quickly in response to driver inputs but it can also be learned based on repeat driver inputs. There is a reference in the Vehicle Owner Guide, under Driving and Automatic Transmission. The learned behavior is typically what leads to unwanted harsh shifts. Certain types of driving can teach the transmission to command higher pressure in anticipation of a high load or sudden load change, some of the most common driving inputs to cause this are stop and go driving, pulling a trailer, quick stops followed by heavy acceleration and rolling stops. These scenarios create a complete lack of load on coast down or braking followed by a sudden high load downshift as the vehicle accelerates, once the TCM learns this behavior it can shift hard even on a gentle accel or low load accel from a stop. This is not an indication of failure; the firm shifts are actually a self preservation measure to prevent slippage and premature wear. If you clear the vehicle KAM and adaptive shift strategies and the concern is gone for a few hundred miles, the shifts are learned and no repair is available. You can advise the customer on the types of driving that lead to this and assure them that no damage is being done to the transmission.”
I’m not buying it.

Left a post at #62. Since then they replaced the drive shaft and reprogrammed a few times. Still did not fix the problem. They finally replaced the drive shaft again and put a new tranny in. Seems to be working pretty well now and has been for about 15k.
November 15th, 2012 at 11:32 am
I put 4k miles on my 2009 F-150 4×4 XLT truck since December 2011. Always had a clunk when taking off and stopping, never better than 15.7 mpg – ever. Was told that is normal until the truck learns your driving. Noticed a large treans leak under the front of the trans – service said it was a pan gasket and had it replaced. Trans still leaks and now will not move – slips in F and R, but eventually clunks into gear and creeps along. Trans shop is quoting $1,500 min to open and evaluate, but most likely a $4k rebuild. I will have nearly 1/4 of the truck value into trans and I am out of warranty. Just back to work after being unemployed for 1.5 years – Nice gift from Ford – another trans bill. Merry Christmas! Anyone getting support from Ford regarding their boat anchor?
November 28th, 2012 at 10:01 am
Bought a 2012 F150 FX2 with the Ecoboost motor 3 weeks ago. It now has 900 miles on it and has started shifting hard at low speeds between 2nd and 3rd and 4th to 5th. Any suggestions other than dumping it in the dealers lot.
December 3rd, 2012 at 4:52 pm
Brian–It’s under warranty so let them work on it. If you start tinkering with it, they could void your warranty.
December 7th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
I hope Brian #87 is not the same Brian as #86 but didn’t learn his lesson!
I have a 2010 Ford F-150 XL SuperCrew 5.4L with tranny probs which led me here. Holy cow I’m not alone!
Hard shift with knock when shifting from D to R. R to D does it also but I feel it less.
So the lemon law is like baseball huh? Three strikes yer out!

my 2010 150xlt has a rough shift since new ,,,,,paid to correct ,,,same paob ,,second tsa was free and still the same …after 60 years with ford maby its time to look at a toyota
December 16th, 2012 at 4:44 pm
I have owned a 2009 f150 since April 09 and have put more money into the truck than I could have ever imagined. I have replaced almost every part in that truck and have been dealing with ford for the last 6 months bc my transmission is shot. The truck towed once and never hauled anything major. I have already purchased a toyota tundra and have not had one problem in 6 months. Ford is telling me that it is a $6000 fix. Worst customer service ever. I have had it at numerous dealers and they all say the same thing. There was no warning that the tranny would go. Hit the gas and a grind and rolled down the hill. I have contacted ford numerous times and they have been no help at all.
December 17th, 2012 at 10:24 pm
Brian #86 here – not the same as #87. Local place “fixed” my valve body issue with a rebuild kit – including the torque converter for $4600. Most parts available for the 2009 trans are now upgraded. There is an aftermarket valve body hitting the market soon, that will eliminate the crappy aluminum Ford valve body. Something about the electronic and manual shifters fighting each other and this is chewwing the housings up….
December 19th, 2012 at 8:21 pm
I have read alot of these reviews and I am seeing the same problem with my 2009 f150 . Mine is currently in the shop getting fixed under warranty thank god .. What they told me was bearings that hold the diff in place as well end cap bearings that’s what causing my hard down shift n up shift from 1st to 2nd as well causing a hmm ing noise from the rear they also recommend putting some friction additive to help lubricate the gears better due to the limited slip .. Mine has 116,000 km on it and has never had any computer updates or anything .. I hope this information can be some use n help
December 20th, 2012 at 1:20 pm
John: If you have been in three or more times under the warranty for the issue, you may want to look into your rights.
December 21st, 2012 at 4:25 am
I have now been told it is my tires again. I have new tires on the truck. this vibration is a widespread issue and the dealers know it. Ford is screwing their customers and not doing anything. I am at my wits end. I have talked to the general manager, service manager, Ford corporate, another dealer and i get the same runaround everytime. Im stuck with a vibrating, hard shifting piece of crap.

I bought a new 2010 F150 4×4 Lariat Crew Cab – loaded in Sept 2010, it was getting 16-18 mpg for about 450 miles then I noticed a slamming when it shifted from 1st to 2nd when it was cool one morning, I live in Florida so it was not really cold, shortly there after my gas mileage went to 12 mpg and has never improved, I have had it back to the dealer approx 5 times for the shifting (which has gotten considerably worse) and the mpg issue. Each time the response was the computer etc shows nothing wrong or that is the nature of the truck, now the truck is 2 years old and I have only put a total of 11,000 miles on it, it just fraustrates me when it slams several times each time I start down the street in the AM, sometimes it will do this after it has run 30 miles or so and I shut it off for 20 minutes. Sometimes when it slams it does so with such force you think some has run into the back of the truck. Bought from Flagler Ford, Palm Coast, Fl

I have a 2012 f150 4×4 fx and I have been having a lot of issues it is headed to the shop for the fourth Time. You can be driving and stop and when you go to take off it just revs up like you have it in neutral, also it sometimes when put in park and restarted takes off in fifth gear. The ford dealership tried to tell me that this truck is so smart that it has learned the way I drive verses the way people drive my truck!! Really yeah I thought they must think I was born yesterday… They have reset the computer that did not work then they hooked a machine to the steering colum and told me if it did it again I would have 30 seconds to push a button and it would send it to a computer to tell them what is wrong with the vehicle , that didn’t work either now they are saying it is the transmission cylinoid that shifts the gears… I just am sick of the run around I paid a lot of money for this truck and I just want what I paid for this is really made me look at ford in a whole new way this truck is not safe to really be on the roads when it stops and you are trying to go across two lanes of traffic and this vehicle hesitates it really scares me especially when I have my kids in it!!!! Ford needs to do something and they need to do it soon these trucks are just a lawsuit waiting to happen!!!!
January 9th, 2013 at 11:59 pm
Seeing how the are at least 75 others on just this site… what do we have to do to file a class action law suit against ford for having these problem myelf and my brothers bramd new truck as well! Getting up to speed let off in 3rd slams into 4th whole truck feels like nitrous boosting through it! Then the getting up to speed amd all of a sudden you find yourself doing 70mph and if it weren’t for the new exhaust system I wouldn’t be able to tell I’m stuck in 3rd gear. Simple way to fix as vehicle is in motion: take it out of drive put into neautral let Rpms settle put back intodrive will usually throw into 5/6 gear. If you are above 45mph that is given time and deceleration to not go back to speed where third gear would be allowed to operate. If all else fails take out of drive into neutral and turn off vehicle yes while driving and restart in neutral and place back into drive.only reason i know this is due to hands on experience in the last yearand after doing 70 in 3rd gear no dealership accessible while on phone with tomball ford service department saying I don’t know what it is you will have to bring it in for us to look at and trouble shoot needless to say that was after I asked how long he thougt till I’d end up blowing a head gasket.any class actions going on yet let me know!

I purchased a 2011 F-150 Platinum used (6,000 miles) and am having the same problems mentioned here. At the start, I noticed what seemed to be a brief vibration in the rear at about 30 mph. Now at 21,000 miles, I am experiencing all kinds of shifting irregularities along with a “bump” when I stop at a light…sort of like someone rear ended me. I took it to the dealer last week and they said it needed a computer software update. It is still doing the same thing. I have never owned a Ford truck until I purchased this one, and from the looks of it, I may never purchase another one.
January 25th, 2013 at 5:42 pm
I have had the same problem that has been addressed from the day I purchaswed the truck in 2009. I was told the dealer had a software upgrade that would take care of the issue; it did not. I personally do not think they did a thing, because nothing changed. We live in a hilly area and I find that in many situation the transmission does not down shift correctly as well which i have compalined to the dealer about as well. Again each time they have looked at it, it has not got any better.
Quite honestly this is the worst transmission that I have ever had in a vehicle. I have got where that I have given up talking to the dealer about it because I get is excuses and am told that the it is operating normal, which is absolute bull s—. If I trade it in I would lose to much money.
January 28th, 2013 at 7:16 pm
I am here in Texas and I just bought a new 2011 F150 Lariat 4×4 in April of 2012. I just had to take my truck in for service about this today, with 18K miles on it, because when it shifts from 1st to second it seems as if it is slipping and then catches and slams it into gear, then it is even worse going from 2nd to third. When I brake it downshifts rough and the rpms shoot way up and it feels as if someone has bumped me from behind. I am really concerned now that I am reading all of these related issues and I think mine may be one of these lemons. I hope not as I love my truck and have owned only ford trucks for years. I will keep everyone posted.
January 28th, 2013 at 11:47 pm
I bought a 2006 F-150 Supercrew about a year ago with 85000 miles on it. Transmission felt weird after two weeks. I went back to the dealer and they said they are no responsible for it. Transmission went out 1 month later. I had the transmission rebuilt and now the truck is slamming into 2nd gear. Sometimes it will do it, sometimes not. This week I lost power on the highway and the check engine light went on. Code 2012. TAC stuck open

January 31st, 2013 at 9:07 am
i have a 2010 F 150 LARIAT, still under warranty. i left my truck at the dealership to get the same problem fixed. CLUNKING when taking off and coming to a complete stop, transmission gear hunting problem. i was told there was a new fix out of Alabama. they are going to install a rear end from a RAPTOR”. LOL. I find this amusing a good ol” boy messin around in the shop came up with the idea. if it works and doesnt effect fuel milage, im in. i doubt it will fix the problem. The dealer told me it was charrachteristics of the truck. i replied so are your blue eyes . what a goof . i told service i wont pick up the truck until the problem was fixed. unfortunately the loaner car was an Escape. a tin can. i am still waiting for the district service rep to call me . i wont except any excuses after that. can you say manufacturer buyback?

Have a 2010 F-150 purchased new. Transmission sometimes doesn’t sift into reverse for a couple of seconds. It experiences hard shifts when cold starts. Tranny seems to search for gearing when lugged at low speeds.Been in shop twice with no codes showing.
Any help?

Purchased 2009 F150 Aug.24,2009 and has same transmission issues as hundreds here.Truck has 33,000 miles(still under warranty).Spoke to dealership just last week about transmission shuddering(1st-2nd,then 2nd to 1st…and intermittent 2-3 second delay in reverse)ALL WHEN VEHICLE APPEARS COLD.Have been warming(7-10 minutes)before attempting to pull out of driveway(which seems to lessen the problems).Hesitant to take to dealer for fear of hatchet job, fruitless repair attempts(which could worsen or shorten transmission life).Only one person has indicated here a solution-Slip Yoke in driveshaft. Is that correct?Does Ford(Dearborn)have a”for sure” corrective procedure since so many complaints? Please advise.
February 5th, 2013 at 3:21 pm
Ray: If it is under warranty, you need to get it into the shop to illustrate the problem is continuing.
February 5th, 2013 at 5:30 pm
I got my truck back the next day and they said they had to flash the transmission, just like all the other people posting on here said. It is not shifting as hard as it did before but is still a little noticeable from 2nd to 3rd gear. When I come to a stop it still feels as if something bumps into the back of my truck? I am going to take it in for a second look and see if they can grease the slip yoke as others have suggested. My truck was manufactured on 12-2010. It is a 2011 Lariat 4×4 Supercrew Limited. This trucks msrp was 53K and it has every available option out there, but if the transmission is bad, I guess it really doesn’t matter how nice the truck is right. It has been a lot warmer down here in Texas and I am wondering if that is the reason it is shifting better as well. It was a lot colder when it had the really hard shifts.
February 5th, 2013 at 10:24 pm
bought a 2007 F150 5.4 V8 triton automatic used. 3 years ago with 30K miles. on it. Now have 117,000 miles, While having the oil changed a year ago mechanic noticed transmission was leaking fluid. he replaced the main seal ( Whatever that is ) transmission seemed to be fine until last couple of weeks – now going up any kind of steep slope – hill or incline it doesnt want to shift into 2nd gear violent shaking and clunking noise comming from transmission-i have to back off on accelerator until noise starts to GO AWAY ! and finially kicks into gear.checked the transmission fluid level today and noticed there is very little to no fluid on dip stick. ( apparently leaking again ) i could not see any vissible leaking fluid- added 2 quarts of reccomended fluid not sure what the results will be. have appointment in 4 days. to go into the shop ( no longer under warrenty ). You should not have to make it a habbit to check tranny fluid like you would the oil. & there is no warrning light on dash to tell you tranny fluid is low ( or leaking )

I purchased a used 2009 F-150 Platinum, after owning a Silverado and an Avalanche….WHAT WAS I THINKING…..I have expierenced all of the above, and now I can’t take it out of gear. I apply the brakes, and squeeze the shift lever, but it is stuck. I sometimes have to turn the truck off and back on, and that might work. Other times I keep pumping the brakes, and keep squeezing the lever. I have told the dealership, and they test drive it and claim nothing is wrong. It never does this when they have it. They dont want to be out any money to drop in a new transmission, and can’t sell it acting the way it does. I DETEST this vechicle, and will NEVER buy another Ford product.

I bought a brand new F 150 2011 Had it into dealer several times start time 700 miles for vibration An shelter 2 different dealerships told me that there was no issue with vehicle everything was normal I’ve been trying to get rid of It under the BBB They said everything was normal Hired an attorney and I Won’t even explain how much of a joke this is Good luck

Used 2005 FX4 supercab 5.4 11k miles. last 10k miles or so slamming in OD btw 40 and 60 mph. Driving without OD on, lots more power but still does it when ever I forget to take the OD off. Really like this truck runs like a bear, except this problem. I hear the tranny does have problems, like the rest on here… I know the tranny is going to go eventually… dont have the money for this.
Any suggestions… I hear it may be a internal switch or a transmission range sensor circuit

I purchased a NEW, 2012 Lariet in March of 2012. Within one week, I noticed strange shifting patterns. Went in for a brake cable problem a week later and mentioned the shifting issue. Was told to drive it for a few thousand miles as it had to “learn” how I drove. Took it back for routine maine. at about 6000 miles and again complained about shifting issues.
i.e. late or unusual shift from 2 to 3 or back. I had a hard time really describing what was happening but knew it wasn’t right. They flashed the trans. I really didn’t notice any difference. Now at 9000 miles it finally failed, mechanical light came on, took it in and am waiting for a valve body part as I write this. You’ll see me here again if it doesn’t fix the problem.

Well the hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and again from 2nd to third is back. This is going to be the third time in for this problem. Each time they say “they are going to flash the transmission”. I am also having a problem when I come to a stop, it feels as if some one has bumped into me from behind. I am very concerned now that I may have purchased a 50 thousand dollar truck with some major issues!

THE GENTLEMAN FROM THE SHOP PLUGGED IN HIS MACHINE , BUT COULDNT GET A CODE READING AT ALL NO CODES WERE GIVING WHILE THE BUCKING HAPPENED . I WONDER IF I EVEN NEEDED THE TRANIE REBUILT, PROBALY COULDVE JUST FLUSHED FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE AND SAVED 2500.00 ? , IVE HEARD AND GOOGLED THAT A FEW PEOPLE ARE SAYING ITS A MISS FIRE AT 40 TO 45 MPH AND COULD HAVE BAD PLUGS , BAD PLUG WIRE BOOT ENDS OR BAD COILS ? I own a 2010 f150 crew cab i purchased new in quincy massachusetts. Have had this back to two different dealers and have delt all but one with the purchasing dealer. The original problem was the vibration on upshifting or torque converter lock-up to be even more specific.. For those of us that don’t understand the complexity of the inner working, let me give you the basics. Automatic transmissions shift through an arangement of gears that are listed as “speeds”. A oil filled fluid device called a touque converter couples the engine turning energy to the transmission to aid in the smothness of operation as well as the ablity to add more twisting force to the input shafts of the transmission at certain times and conditions. With this twisting or rather torque conversion process develops wasted motion and heat. In other words the energy put into the torque converter is reduce in comparison the energy put out of the device. So to improve on fuel figures and lessen losses, 99% of all modern transmissions have this Torque Converter designed to do these certain things. Some have a what they call Varible inner Turbine blades that change pitch. Much like a window fan blade is constructed these will scoop more or less fluid depending on speed load and other factors. Also there is a clutch installed inside this device that will apply and lock the input shaft to the output shaft.
That being said my experience has been after the transmission and its oil heats up to a point, this converter locks up, it stick- slips to use a term most hydrolyc and clutching experts use. this means it locks tight (sticks) and than does not have the frictional strenght to stay locked and slips only to lock again (Shudders). This continues until the load decreases or the frictional forces increase. Thus a ( shudder) felt after city trafic high way back ups etc. The specific timing of the vibrations were as follows: after 1st shift aprox 3 seconds ( shudder) second shift ( shudder)
Third shift shudder 4, 5, 6 same
first second and third visit was a computor reflash (Re-program). The reflash eliminated the lock-up of the converter on 12345 and only allow a 6th gear lock-up same conditions occur on 5 to 6 lock-up. the last 2 Visits were un fruitful and only exasperated me furthur.
The other condition is when coasting and climbing a incline the transmission converter unlocks only to re apply with a slight shudder. while towing worstens
My theory is 2 fold. first the programing is flawed in the application of the torque converer. or second the converter construction is flawed I also Suspect the transmission controler and engine controller are not in the best comunication. Dealers say that I was the only one with major issue. Asked to have a oil cooler installed to help lower the fluid temp no resolve. Will add my own.. just a theory should help.
My warantee just ran out to no resolve. I Own it now.. Sorry ford you blew it!! you lost a customer for life.

2011 F-150 5.0 FX4. 37k miles, just bought it used last week. Hard 1-2 shifts and I believe I experienced a hard 2-1 down shift, followed by shuddering. All below 10 mph while coasting or low load. Just brought it in to dealer and they returned it and said to come back if I have issues. Needless to say, I’ll be heading back in.
August 8th, 2013 at 1:49 pm
I have a 2012 fx4 extended cab. A month ago I was pulling out into traffic and there was nothing, I floored it barley made it out into traffic so I could pull over. I had also noticed hard shifts, like it couldn’t make up it’s mind on what gear it should be in. I brought it back and they said they had to reboot the system and that it would take a couple of weeks to learn my habits again. Bang same thing happend again pulling out into traffic i almost got T-boned , also trying to get off the beach before the tide came in, it did the same thing. I find I have to put it in 1st or shut it off and restart it.
September 13th, 2013 at 9:32 am
Does the shuddering you all describe sound like bass from music and/or like you are driving over the grating indentions of the highway?? I have a 2010 F-150 xlt that does this shit!!!
October 5th, 2013 at 12:25 pm
I have 2005 Ford Expedition that I bought new from the dealer with only 4miles. Now it has 118k. The dealership where I bought it from is now closed (Burd Ford). The O/d light flashes along with the transmission. It has a tough time coming out of 1st and 2nd gear as if it it was in neutral and then begins to shake. When it gets in 3rd it goes like nothing is wrong. I changed the transmission fluid, but still having the same problem. Can’t figure this one out and then I have just stumbled on this website. I am here in Indianapolis wondering what to do.

Does this lemon law exist in Canada. 2012 f150 lariat. Epic piece of shit since day 1. Has spent a total of 27 days and nights in a service bay throughout the past year and half. Not 1 of the issues has been rectified!!!! Please help
October 23rd, 2013 at 5:52 pm
Lots of luck, I had the same problem with my 2010 Lariat,58K truck, D Alex Macdonald Summerside PEI turned their back on me, ended up buying a 2011 Edge limited fully loaded from them then ran into a major pull drift to the right problem, sub frame problem…guess what Ford Canada says to bad so sad thet’s the way they drive even though I pointed out the problem to the salesman before I bought the piece of crap..time to stay away from the shit Ford is producing..!!!

I have a 2012 that jerks from take off, is this the trans or rear end, it almost seems it is slipping or trying to change gears?
November 3rd, 2013 at 4:17 pm
My 2012 F150 FX4 shifted from 6th to 1st on the highway while I was in the fast lane doing 70 mph , it locked the back wheels then ran itself into redline , I almost caused a 3 lane accident , remember no brake lights come on when this happens , it went to the dealer for a week for a computer update and when I picked it up it was good for 2 days and then did the same thing on Halloween driving at 35 mph on a street full of kids , I’m so disgusted with this truck right now , its going back to the dealer tomorrow morning, I’m sure they are going to tell me they can’t find a thing wrong with it, I came very close to buying a Toyota and now I’m wishing I did
November 14th, 2013 at 1:18 pm
I have a 2010 F150 Crew cab at 42,000 miles that shudders as I start out under moderate to heavy acceleration. It feels like the rear tire is slipping. It only happens the first and maybe the second time I start from a stop, as though the tranny warms up enough that it doesn’t shudder the rest of the trip. Once it is parked for an extended period, it will shudder again as I start out. The dealer says he felt it, but has no idea what is causing it. He suggested I just ignore it unless it gets worse….and hope that if it does it happens before the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty expires.

2008 F150 brought in 6/2011 at @38K miles for shifting problems from 1st to 2nd. They said nothing wrong. Brought in again 11/2011 for a whining sound. They said nothing wrong. Brought it in two weeks ago at 61k miles, which happens to be 10K miles over 50,000 manufacturers power train warranty and 5 months, 22days over warranty, for the same whining sound and they say Push Pin bad, needs a new transmission. Bought a Ford remanufactored for $3,050 and had dealership install. First day, reverse light not working, fixed. Two days later, reverse lights not working again then trans fault indicator came on with O/D off light on. I never turned O/D off. They said needs a new Torque Converter. I want a new rebuilt and they said no. HELP

My 2012 F 150 Ecoboost had 12,550 miles when I noticed a jerking when pulling out of a stop. Later, it felt like a cement block was stacked in the bed and fell. My dealer said that was a normal gear shift. I final got results at 15,000 miiles when they said I needed to have my computer reset. The problem continues, and seems to be getting worse. Now I was told I need to have at least 500 miles after resetting as to have the transmission adapt to my style of stopping and starting. I have had Dodge trucks for 40 years and never had that issue. I have since talked to 4 other friends that are having similar problems with there F150 My Ecoboost does a tremendous job towing and otherwise no issues.

i have a 2011 f150 lariat 4×4 ecoboost. i have 14000 miles after 2 years. its been working great until last weeks.i have had the last weeks noticed a weird thing.
i stop at red light and it feels like rpm will stop. i look at rpm it moves up and down the truck shruggs like if idle is rough.
green light i press on accelerator and there is no reaction and it feels like stall and gear is locked in first gear. i stop where i can and then it start working normally again. this has happened 5 times and truck is in with ford dealership for the second time. first visit ended with truck is good with no codes and must have been fluke…lol
the gear shift was in Drive and not in M. Gears were not locked in any way.
will keep y’all updated…
December 14th, 2013 at 10:46 am
3rd time in with ford dealership. They had it for 3 Days and drove it with no issues. They wanted to install recorder that I would press if issue occurs. I will have them put it in. Will keep updated. This morning from stand still when pressing accelerater pedal it shudders and chunks it in to 5 gear and locks it. I have to stop and put it in park and then back in drive.
December 27th, 2013 at 2:09 pm
Truck is a 2010 F-150 and noticed the hard shifting at 1-2 since the beginning but didn’t worry much about it. Just noticed transmission fluid leaking in my driveway. Found this discussion and now I’m pissed. Wished I would have taken it in, but a hard shift here and there didn’t bug me.
January 17th, 2014 at 6:57 pm
2011 Ford F-150 STX purchased used at ~7,000mls. Currently 15,000mls. Hard shifting from 1-2, and 2-1 esp when cold. Called service dept at local ford dealership about a TSB, said none were needed for mine. Not sure what to do at this point. Looking for some guidance.

I’m having the same issues as much of the above. i get a very heavy shift from 2-3 when transmission is cold. It’s so bad it feels like the diff will bounce out. I also get the shuddering on the highway as well. Dealer has looked at this vehicle on numerous occasion and said he can’t find anything wrong with it. Did one computer update and still the same. I did get them to grease the yoke at one point too but it didn’t last long. I would like to be ifomred of ANY class action suit in Canada, thank you!
April 5th, 2014 at 10:20 am
I had a 2009 that had many of the transmission issues listed. It was in the dealer most of the time until I took a loss and sold it. I then tempted fait again and bought a 2011 Ecoboost. I am experiencing the above listed trans problems as well as the shuddering rear differential on slow moving turns. Trans also seems to shudder and slip when accelerating in higher gears. So crappy fuel economy and another run around. Will probably trade truck on a gmc or a new ram., tired of fighting with Ford.

I have a 2001 f-150 xl with standard tranny, and it jumps out of OD all the time. I can not even hold it in to that gear ?? This problem has been there almost since brand new ? Ford does not have a reason for this happening. This is a 5 speed and its a pain driving in the lower gears all the time on highway. I live in New Mexico. Thanks
April 29th, 2014 at 6:52 pm
my 2013 f 150 4×4 xlt crew cab is having an issue of grinding metal and dead battery clicking when i shift on the fly into 4 wheel drive at 35 miles per hour. I have taken it to dealer and they can not find the trouble and saqy they can not make it repeat the sound. THEY SAY IT MUST ALL BE MY IMAGINATION. Is any one else havint this trouble ??/

“Looks like a gernade went off inside the gears! They’ve never seen anything like this in the shop!” – “you are going to have to have a totally new transmission” those were the words this morning of the Ford mechanic shop that holds our 2011 Ford F150 Lariat 4×2 super Crew with Ecoboost 3.5L V6 that has only 59,940 miles on it. The truck has never towed; it has been maintained and driven with care. No real problems before. We had taken a trip driving from Austin to Phoenix and just at our destination; we coasted basically as the transmission completely went out. Thank the Lord it didn’t go out as we came down the steep grades near Flagstaff or I probably wouldn’t be here writing. I’m told it will take a week to get my truck back to me. Not so happy with the Ford choice of a retirement traveling vehicle now.
May 8th, 2014 at 2:01 am
I have a 2011 ford f150 with the 6.2L V8 engine. I bought it brand new. At around the 4000 mile mark I started to notice a violent jerk between first and second gears. It literally scares passengers in my truck. This typically occurs during stop and go traffic. It’s used to be 3 or 4 times a day, but has now reached about 8 or 9 times a day. I have taken it to ford 4 times as I wanted to get it taken care of while under warranty. They reprogrammed each time and actually insulted me by saying the jolt I’m feeling was normal. So, now I am near the 90K mile mark, no warranty, and the problems are getting worse. Is there anything I can do about this? It’s just not right, makes me sick. I hate ford.

Took it to dealer they said their transmission guy was out and would have to come back. Wow,one transmission guy? world Ford in Smyrna,ga is terrible for service.
I will never buy Ford again this is my second Ford truck and have had tranny issues in both

2011 Ford F150 6.2 L V8 absolutely LOVE the truck BUT extremely frustrated with the hard shifting. Slowing down to a stop you can feel what seems like a strong Bump pushing from the rear. Slowing to a stop then accelerate before you actually stop, HARD down shift with a strong bump. Been to the shop three times. Updated computer replaced and repacked the yoke. I KNOW THIS IS NOT A NORMAL CHARACTORISTIC of Ford like I have been told.
I just want it fixed and ideas
April 26th, 2015 at 6:41 pm
I have ford 150 2013 eccoboost with 51K miles. My transmission would downshift without warning from 6 to 1 going 50 miles/h, or 5 to 2 etc. it also has stuck in 1st gear couple of times. No warnings, no patterns. Dealership have not been able to determine the cause of it. My vehicle is not safe to drive but no one can fix it.!?

I currently have the “shudder” issues. I have brought the truck in and had the PCM & TCM updated but the problem wasn’t resolved. My truck is a 2010 Ford F150 STX with only 60000 miles that I purchased in February 2010 new. Where do I start?

i have a 2011 f150, currently has 73k on it. my truck did the same as dave described, ill be driving down the road and the speedometer will actually start to fluctuate. when doing this the truck will then start to downshift, today traveling at 65 mph the truck downshifted into 1st and locked the rear tires up and red-lined the truck. after doing so the truck was way down on power as if it was in a safety mode. the truck is doing this consistently the last few days, i need serious help figuring this out

This shuttering vibration is from a 2 PC driveshaft that needs grease
Take the rear section out and pack handful grease in and problem solved

I have an 2011 F150 Lariat 4 by 4, truck had 400 miles on it when I got it. The truck thuds into gear almost everytime I shift it. Have told ford about it several times, was told I was an aggressive driver. Was told that its because I have a steep driveway. I told them it does this when it is flat on the ground. Now I have transmission problems, at about 50+mph, the truck acts like it is trying to shift, it thuds, shakes the truck, scares the hell out of you, especially when you are on the freeway going 50+ mph. I plan on taking it back to for for this. I also have problems with the rear end. Whenever it gets wet out or sandy or just bumpy going around corners, truck bounces around corners, will not stay on the ground, when wet, it slid completely out from the back and turned me sideways on the road. This is with just a small amound of water on the road. Sand, it slides sidways. I asked about this at a tire shop. Was told the traction control needed to be reset from the factory. Asked ford about it, “they could not duplicate the problem, was told they checked the computer and could see no problem with the traction control. My truck has 25895 miles on it. Just replaced all 4 tires and had all 4 rotars ground down because the brake pedal would vibrate under my foot WHEN BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY. The tire shop told me my tires looked like I had been driving on rocks, the truck bounces all over the road and I have a hell of a time keeping it on the road. My sunroof leaks, the front power seat has had to be worked on twice, back slider window had to be worked on. I just wake up in the morning and wonder, WHAT THE HELL ELSE IS GOING TO BE WRONG WITH MY TRUCK. I live in southern california, they are expecting a heavy el nino this year, that means rain. Right now I am terrified that if the roads get wet, that truck is going to slam into someoine else or worse. I have had this truck into the shop several times, most of the time they do nothing. They kept it for 2 days and fixed NOTHING. Wish me luck…
September 14th, 2015 at 7:35 pm
I have a 2012 F1 50 XLT with a V6 with a six speed transmission. Sounds like Ford hasn’t fix the problem. My insurance card from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th. I haven’t noticed it on the downshift but I feel I thud after I make a complete stop. It’s at the dealership right now second time in for the same problem hasn’t been fixed yet. Pretty sure I’m going to get the runaround so I’ll probably be contacting the factory next. Please let me know if there’s a fix for this.
October 13th, 2015 at 3:06 pm
I have a 2010 F-150 and have the same issues with shifting. The truck has a very hard downshift, especially when going into overdrive or when first accelerating. Truck also shudders when going slowly like first accelerating or driving slowly through my neighborhood. I had the transmission rebuilt in Jul 2015 (shop had my truck for 3 weeks) and just dropped it off again this week for the same issues. The truck is only 5 years old, what is going on that it’s having so many shifting problems and the dealership can’t seem to correct it. Sadly, I owe to much on the stupid thing to get rid of it too.
January 8th, 2016 at 5:04 pm
I have 2011 f150 crew xtr it had the same issues when you slowed down usually after coming off the highway.. It would feel like I got rear ended. The other issue I have is I start the engine immediately put it in drive and there’s no power it usually takes 10-15 seconds then it will drive.
Too many issues with this truck it just got traded for a Tundra.
Ford I’m out..
January 18th, 2016 at 12:24 pm
I recently purchased a 2006 f150 xlt last year used, I never noticed the shudder problem until after it was bought, mine only does it between 70-90kmh (so third gear) I’ve had the transmission rebuilt last week and the problem was still there, the mechanic at the transmission shop said it was caused by a plugged cat, so I changed those out and it’s still happening, it’s now back in the transmission shop for the second time in a week and it doesn’t seem like any mechanic can figure it out. Is there any fix this issue? Or does ford Canada know about this/going to fix it
July 8th, 2016 at 11:54 am
I just recently purchased a 2015 f150. The truck has less then 9000 miles on it. It’s my seem minor now I’m just hoping to find an alternative soon. Coming to a stop the transmission hiccups from a higher gear into first. Also the transmission will sometimes slam into 5th gear from 4th gear or vice versa.
October 6th, 2016 at 8:07 am
I have a 2011 ford f-150 sometimes youre going around a corner at a idle speed and the dam thing slam into another gear feels like transmission coming out of truck
October 20th, 2016 at 2:29 pm
2013 F150 has been in the shop 4 times for the same issue. The truck will downshift to 1st gear at highway speeds causing the rear tires to begin sliding and the engine to tach out over 7000 – 8000 rpm nearly losing control of the vehicle. The ford dealer indicated that the computer indicated that there was nothing wrong and to continue driving it. I did so and it did it again. This time it was blamed on a loose ground wire. It seems ok until the next day when it acted like it was going to downshift and the wrench light came on, the speedometer dropped to zero, the dash went blank, and the drivers air bag light illuminated. Ford kept the vehicle for a week and during that time they had a computer on it and they said it was fine but wanted me to drive it with the computer hooked up and instructed me what to do if it caused the issue again. The next morning going to work it did the same thing again and I managed to capture it on the computer and with a picture.
The one thing I noticed this time was that the truck remains in 5tgh gear except when stopped when it drops to 3rd gear then promptly returns to 5th gear only. It is now very hesitant about going into gear at all. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.
October 26th, 2016 at 2:19 pm
2014 F150 3.5L from Kazakhstan (this is the country:)))
Harsh engaging Drive or Reverse.
Fake local Ford dealer can do nothing!
I’m planning to do some transmission tests…

I just bought my truck a month ago ask the dealer why the price was so low his answer was the rims and from the dents.
The truck is a Ford F-150 2012 with 67,000 miles and come to find out
it’s has transmission problems dealer just flat out lied to me. When i
confronted him about the issue ask why i didn’t contact to get help to
solve the issue
May 1st, 2017 at 10:42 pm
i have a 2013 ford f 150 and while driving down the road my truck at 50mph in 5th gear and accelerating drops into 1st gear pretty much bringing the truck to a complete stop ive done the research and the truck was built in the kansas plant where the 2011-2012 trucks have a recall for the same problem. i called the recall # and asked since my truck was built in 2012 could it be possable that my truck recived a 2012 transmission and the question was avoided but since its a 2013 i was told to take it to the dealer and have it fixed and to save the receipt and if there is a recall i could get a refund

My truck is a 2010 F150. In 2013 at 100,000 miles I had to have the transmission completely replaced. Was sold a refurbished transmission by Mahwah Ford. Was given a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. Now I have 200,000 miles on my truck and I have to replace the transmission again. Does Ford make this transmission to only last for 100,000 miles. Truck is serviced per the recommended intervals within the Ford manual.
Ford advertises,”Built Ford Tough. It’s synonymous with the rugged capability, outstanding performance and dependability of Ford trucks.” My truck does not seem to be tough, rugged or dependable.
I have had 3 Explorers, and 3 Mustangs that were better then F150!

My truck shifts hard into 1st from a stop or from park. It’s a 2013 3.7 XLT. I’m hoping it doesn’t get worse.

Our 2009,5.4 Ltr F150 had a leaky electrical port where the wire harness plug that connects into the transmission fits. The leak caused sever corrosion to the plug and wires and rendered the vehicle undrive-able. All the wires going into the plug were damaged and they go to the computer and other components in the truck. After searching, we found there is a service bulletin for this issue, basically every 6R80 Transmission out there will have or has had this issue, even those not in the F150 ( The Sport Trac V-8 as 1 example ).
We contacted our local Ford Dealer for a replacement harness only to find out 6 years after this vehicle was made, Ford had already discontinued / obsoleted the part. After doing a Nation Wide search and also searching Ford Houses in Canada, there were none to be found. We had to purchase a used Trans, with a cut off plug assy still installed in order to get the part. Even checking the Insurance data bases and wrecking yards across the country no one had any, the harnesses are cut off and thrown into a recycle pile upon the vehicles arrival while it is being dismantled. We were without our vehicle for 2 1/2 months, Ford offered to give us preferred pricing on a NEW vehicle, ( the current on was almost paid off ). Yeah, right…..
I read the accounts above concerning the shuddering. My question when being told it is normal, would be how come the vehicle was even kept to be looked at and why did the mechanic feel it necessary to look deeper into a problem, if there wasnt one?Obviously, the mechanic sensed an issue when it was test driven, how many other vehicles run like that? Was there a bill, if the vehicle truly was in good working order, there shouldnt be….. And if “Ford is working on a solution” then they obviously saw a problem…..or, who is lying here? Call these S.O B.’s out!!!
As much as I liker Ford trucks, we have had several, from Rangers, F150’s F250’s and F350’s , gas and Diesel, 4×4 and 2WD, This has left a huge bad taste in my mouth. We run a service business and count on our Service Trucks to run every time, all the time. Ford quality has fallen WAY short of the bar they set years ago. Shame on them…… I sure am sorry for the problems all these folks have had, I feel and know their frustration.
Toyota anyone? Chevy? GM? Dodge? Gotta say the next 2 vehicles we purchased were not Ford.

I know what each of you are talking about! I work for AAMCO transmissions in a small town in Alabama and I see it at least once a week. There are aftermarket pigtails (the connectors for the solenoids) for the case connector. I specialize in factory f-ups. Did you know that if you buy an Ford, Chevy, BMW, or Mercedes of this year or later you still get this co-apt transmission with the same issues! One thing I can promise is that I’m on it and I’ll find a solution!

Tons of problems with my 2012 Ecoboost. First my truck has been in the shop 3 times for coolant leaks. The first two times they claimed they fixed it and then my transmission is blown and I notice it’s low again so they looked at both. Needed a new transmission and the coolant was leaking again by the turbo. Total piece of crap will never buy a ford again

bought my 2008 f150 supercab xlt 5.4 triton and 3 days after it started slamming into gear from park and shifting hard through all gears. has 99000 miles on it. i paid $8000 for it and already put 250 in it and now seems it needs a new transmission. i replaced the fuel pump module and the 4 wheel drive motor. it fixed the problem for about 6 miles and back to it same as before. i have almost wrecked multiple times from the bucking and not wanting to move in gear and having to floor the gas to get it to move initially. it feels like someone is slamming on the breaks then giving it full throttle in all gears when it shifts up and down on its own.

2013 F150 truck will downshift to 1st gear at highway speeds causing the rear tires to begin sliding and the engine to tach out over 7000 – 8000 rpm nearly losing control of the vehicle. It seems ok until the next day when it acted like it was going to downshift and the wrench light came on, the speedometer dropped to zero, the dash went blank, and the drivers air bag light illuminated. The truck also remains in 5tgh gear except when stopped when it drops to 3rd gear then promptly returns to 5th gear only. It is now very hesitant about going into gear at all. This is crazy!

2011 F150 gets stuck in 1st gear. Sometimes I can shut off the engine and restart and it starts shifting properly. Also, some of the gauges will occasionally go dead while I am driving.
Any thoughts?

I bought a 2005 used Fx4. It shuddered and stabled. From the minute I bought it used. The place I bought it. I learned later. Is notorious for selling lemons. I had it three weeks. Drive a little over 1000 miles. It lost all the oil at some point. Causing it to not start at all. I took it back. Demanded refund. We are in court. I’m not paying. Does this law apply? 6500$.

I purchased a 2010 F-150 platinum super crew 6.5 bed. The truck has been spot on perfect recently I noticed a leak underneath and it was the bulk head connector- I had it replaced. The day I got it back I now have a noise coming from mid to back that sounds like 2 metals rubbing together. It happens at 23 mph till 55mph it’s seams to lesson up if towhaul is on.
I haven’t ever towed with this truck I have it for the comfort. The noise happens on upshift and downshift.
Any suggestions

I purchased a new 2018 F150 STX 4×4. Have had it in service twice. Once in February for one week, they could not replicate my engine problems nor my transmission problem. Engine made noise when I deccelerated during a cold start and engine made rattling noise. Transmission made a hard down shift when slowing down. Decided to take my vehicle back because they said my truck’s performance was not affected by the engine noise and the transmission did not have anything wrong.
Put it back in service in April. Sent the service department the Ford TSB for the engine noises because again they didn’t know what to do. They fixed the engine noises. But I also still had transmission issues. Again, they could not replicate nor could they find anything on the computer. My truck stayed in service for 41 days. After being without my truck for that long, decided to take it back since it was obvious they were not going to fix anything.
Transmission is still giving me issues. It’s a hard shift when I’m going down the road, slow or fast, and have to slow down. Doesn’t do it everyday but when it does, it’s annoying. When it happens, it sounds like the truck is dropping something.

I have a 2018 Lariat and I’ve noticed the hard downshift from 3rd to 2 gear , because for some reason in regular shift modes it skips second gear unless you have the truck in sport mode .
Very annoying and also I’ve had a horrible leaky twin panel sunroof leak since I bought it !!
And after numerous visits to Ford and a new roof that still leaks Ford pretty much told me it’s my problem deal with it !!
